What Health System Pharmacy contributes to Cardinal Health
Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective coordination of Cardinal Health's pharmacy operations that service acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care and alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices as well as retail customers.

Health System Pharmacy is responsible for providing customized pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems and other integrated healthcare providers may also consult with and advise healthcare team on prescribed medications, supplies and related processes.

Job Summary

The MA State Office of Pharmacy (MSOPS) Pharmacy Distribution Center (PDC) provides medications via central fill in unit dose or blister card form for DDS, DPH, DMH, DOC, and HOC facilities throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 

The PDC Pharmacy Manager is responsible for organizing and directing all daily operational functions of the Massachusetts State Office of Pharmacy Services (MSOPS) PDC pharmacy services daily operations. The PDC Pharmacy Manager assures all legal, regulatory, and accrediting requirements are maintained at the best demonstrated practice, maintains a professional presence throughout the system including communications with pharmacy staff and MSOPS leadership, and assures pharmacy services and activities are carried out to meet goals and standards of both Cardinal Health and MSOPS. 

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director of Pharmacy (DOP) and Assistant Director of Pharmacy (ADOP) with the oversight of daily PDC operations, including, but not limited to, supervision of pharmacy staff, inventory control, and scheduling of pharmacy staff.

  • Supports PDC DOP and ADOP with completion of assignments regarding pharmacy operations.

  • Participates in MSOPS committee meetings necessary to enhance practice and patient care. 

  • Addresses actionable items from Accreditation Bodies and regulatory agencies standards related to pharmacy. 

  • Supports process for medication charges, and ensure accurate and timely posting of charges to account.

  • Assures staffing levels to meet needs of patients and requirement of MSOPS. 

  • Assists in overseeing purchases of drugs and supplies in accordance with GPO bids and Cardinal Health best demonstrated practices. 

  • Assists in the maintenance of information systems and other technology applications within the Pharmacy. 

  • Responsible for all drug storage areas (all locations) in accordance with legal and best demonstrated practice to include assurance of daily temperature monitoring and removal of outdated medications from pharmacy stock. 

  • Oversees preparation and delivery of medication throughout the MSOPS system in accordance with established delivery times; reports/resolves any delays in collaboration with the PDC DOP and ADOP. 

  • Ensures adherence to standards and training for sterile product preparation in compliance with USP 795/797/800 non-sterile and sterile preparation standards in collaboration with the System Quality Manager.

  • Participates in and supports adherence to reporting requirements of the MSOPS medication safety program. 

  • Achieves acceptable scores as defined by Cardinal Health on operations assessments/audits (PPA, Regulatory, Accreditation, BOP, etc.). 

  • Reviews action plans generated by Cardinal Health audits and correction of identified deficiencies. 

  • Supports employee satisfaction surveys. 

  • Defines and manages the activities and performance of pharmacy staff.  

  • Recruits, hires, retains, and separates employees using Cardinal Health policies and procedures. 

  • Arranges/conducts orientation for new hires within 60 days. 

  • Implements a training and competency program for all staff and maintain records of those completed competencies.

  • Adheres to the pharmacy budget and all aspects related to good purchasing and inventory practices.  

  • Assures control and documentation of controlled substances as defined within Cardinal Health Regulatory requirements and best practices. 

  • Assists in leading and participates in departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programs in absence of PDC DOP and ADOP.
