Position Overview
The Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) is the state’s lead agency serving people with disabilities committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and racial justice. The mission of the Division is to assist individuals with disabilities in achieving their goals of employment, education, and independent living. Participates in an agency-sponsored training for a period of three (3) to eighteen (18) months to gain knowledge of working with individuals who are visually impaired, blind, or DeafBlind in the residential programming at the Bureau of Customer and Community Blind Services/Illinois Center for Rehabilitation and Education - Wood (ICRE-W). This position observes staff and works closely with supervisory staff as well as other professional staff in making a coordinated and effective program for each customer to achieve independence, self-reliance, and their vocational goals. The Division is seeking to hire an energetic and detail-oriented individual with excellent communication skills to provide a safe environment for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, and DeafBlind to reach and maintain their goal of integrated competitive employment.
Job Responsibilities
- For a period of three to eighteen months, carries out activities of the residential program at the Bureau of Customer and Community Blind Services/Illinois School for Rehabilitation and Education-Wood (lCRE-W).
- Receives ongoing supervision and training in the provision of direct services to customers attending day programming and in the residential program.
- Assists in and travels with customers to ensure the safe transit of customers to and from activities and to doctor's appointments, both on and off residential grounds.
- Participates in the preparation of room assignments/new customers coming into the facility and in discussion of customer issues, program rules and guidelines; makes rounds of dormitory to check and report any broken items, unsanitary conditions or unauthorized food, appliances, etc.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to an A.A. (associate’s) degree in childcare, sociology, or human services, or requires two (2) years of experience in the care and supervision of children as could be gained in a day care facility or a Head Start Program.
