About the role

Sage is on a mission to improve care and quality of life for older adults, starting with those residing in senior living facilities. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among adults over 65. And yet, fall prevention and emergency response systems for older adults are archaic and ineffective. At Sage we've built a more modern way of understanding when older adults need help, including methods for residents to alert caregivers when in need of help, and corresponding software for caregivers to triage response. Our company mission is to create a product that our client counterparts love, and this role is a key part of that objective.

Sage is a small, tight team of ambitious, multi-disciplinary entrepreneurs. We are a software-enabled, mission-driven company, and are focused only on the problems that are central to achieving that mission. At Sage, we work hard and fast but also know that to build a truly important company, we need to treat our work as a marathon, and not a sprint. The journey matters.

About this Role

As our first Product Engineering Lead focused on the New Market product experience, you’ll play a critical role in helping Sage expand our impact beyond senior living communities. You’ll have the opportunity to shape a new product from day one, collaborate closely with a small, talented team, and lay the groundwork for something that has the potential to help thousands of families.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead the technical foundation of our New Market product by taking the MVP from concept to launch, setting direction, and navigating ambiguity with confidence and care.
  • Own technical decision-making in a fast-moving environment by identifying when to invest, when to cut corners, and how to build scrappy, scalable systems that evolve with the product.
  • Contribute hands-on across the stack by writing clean, production-ready code and guiding architectural choices that balance speed, impact, and future needs.
  • Drive product outcomes through close collaboration with product and design, translating real user needs into elegant, intuitive solutions.
  • Lead by example and elevate engineering practices by fostering a culture of clarity, ownership, and continuous improvement through code reviews, testing, and thoughtful documentation.
  • Mentor and manage an engineer by offering support, coaching, and technical guidance in a dynamic and high-trust environment.
  • Bring structure to the unknown by breaking down complex, open-ended problems into practical next steps—and keeping momentum even when the path isn’t fully defined.
  • Shape the culture of a new team by showing up with humility, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment, adapt, and learn alongside your teammates.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5-7+ years of software engineering experience, including experience shipping early-stage products and/or working in startup environments
  • Proven success leading technical projects end-to-end, ideally in a 0→1 context
  • Comfort working across the stack and diving into whatever needs attention
  • Excellent product judgment and an iterative mindset, you know when to be scrappy and when to invest
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in cross-functional settings
  • Prior experience mentoring or managing engineers
  • A growth mindset and a high degree of ownership—you’re someone who takes initiative and figures things out

Preferred Qualifications

  • Founding or early engineering experience at a high-growth startup (YC or equivalent is a plus)
  • Experience building and maintaining full-stack applications, with comfort navigating both frontend and backend systems to ship end-to-end features.
  • Experience working in healthcare or building for older adults (not required, but nice to have)
