The Surface Radars & Sensors Center seeks talented STEM students who are interested in ocean engineering. Our Portsmouth, RI team primarily supports programs in the naval undersea and naval surface domains including sensor systems, mine countermeasures, submarines, torpedoes, combat systems, and ship architecture/integration. Our engineers perform underwater acoustics analysis and tracking; develop and manage system requirements; ensure product safety, reliability, maintainability and supportability; integrate hardware and software; develop test plans and procedures; debug and evaluate system functions and interfaces; verify system requirements in support of final sell-off to the customer; and provide product support.
We put our systems together, exercise them in the lab or in the field, measure and analyze performance, and make sure our products work the first time and every time. Every day is a different set of challenges to overcome. You'll be expected to collaborate across disciplines and partner to implement solutions. In this role, you'll get to know a little bit about every aspect of the system and have a direct hand in making it all work together supporting teams of engineers engaged in integration and test efforts.
This position can be a Junior, Senior, or Post Graduate Technical Intern based on the candidate's qualifications and standing as outlined below:
- (Sophomore Technical Intern) - must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program and classified as a Sophomore by start of internship and provide proof of graduation prior to first day of employment.
- (Junior Technical Intern) - must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program and classified as a Junior by start of internship and provide proof of graduation prior to first day of employment
- (Senior Technical Intern)- must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program and classified as a Senior by start of internship and provide proof of graduation prior to first day of employment
- (Post-Graduate Technical Intern) - must have an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a graduate degree program (in degree fields listed in Qualifications You Must Have) by start of internship
This position is an onsite role in Portsmouth, RI.
What You Will Do:
- Conduct data analysis, such as acoustics, radar and sonar data, using tools such as MATLAB
- Perform requirements analysis, development and management
- Support planning and execution of Integration, Verification, or Test activities
- Prepare and present results in reports and briefings to internal or external stakeholders
What You Will Learn:
The candidate will learn real-world engineering skills by being part of a team supporting Systems Engineering and Test Capabilities (SE&TC) activities for naval systems.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- This position is for an intern who is enrolled in a Bachelor’s (or higher) Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) degree program and will be at minimum, entering their sophomore year by the start of summer 2026
- The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Experience with tools, such as MATLAB or Python, for data analysis and automation
- Experience with troubleshooting technical issues with electronics in an academic or internship setting, including the use of common commercial test equipment (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, etc.)
- Experience with or exposure to naval undersea and/or naval surface platforms
