Director Research Operations - Dartmouth Cancer Center

Overview

Provides leadership, guidance, technical oversight, and regulatory support to faculty, administrators, and staff on a wide range of issues and projects for the administrative lifecycle of clinical research studies within Dartmouth Cancer Center, Office of Clinical Research.

Responsibilities

Leads and directs the planning, training, and implementing of initiatives in the pre-award area.

Serves as the key point of contact for all major issues relating to the pre-award functions.

Oversees benchmarking to assess the implementation of pre-award support and reports evaluations results to Senior Management.

Directs and/or supports the development, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures relative to pre-award services and compliance activities.

Serves as an expert on the negotiation of troublesome terms and conditions in federal contracts, industry supported research, and other sponsored agreements.

Responsible and accountable for the direction and/or review of proposals prior to submission to sponsoring agencies for the adequacy, completeness, consistency of content and presentation, and compliance with sponsor criteria and DHMC policies and procedures. Ensures presence of required information and certifications, use of appropriate documentation, templates, and forms, etc.

Responds to requests for additional information pending issuance of awards, supplementing, clarifying, or revising proposal submission.

Oversees or develops and implements and trains staff on internal procedures and guidelines.

Supervises regulatory staff and Clinical Research Administrators.

Executes the full range of personnel management and training responsibilities.

Participates with the Medical Director in the development of office-wide goals and their implementation.

Leads the effort to develop performance indicators for comparison with benchmarking data in support of Dartmouth Cancer Center Office of Clinical Research (DCC-OCR) mission.

Seeks out and promotes good working relations with research and educational partners.

Initiates and responds to communications regarding problematic issues. Collaborates in the analysis and problem solving to determine the best action to be taken. Follows through to insure timely response to external customer requests and requirements.

Participates as the representative of the DCC-OCR in meetings of DHMC committees and professional national organizations.Collaborates with colleagues at other institutions on issues of mutual importance.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree such as an MBA, MS in Healthcare Leadership/Healthcare Management, or other advanced degree preferred.
• Clinical Research Professional Certification preferred
• Seven (7) years of relevant experience in a Clinical Research environment with three (3) years of clinical study operations management and supervisory experience required.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Strong leadership and management skills.
• Ability to handle complex research issues including government compliance regulations and concurrently manage numerous projects in several diverse areas.
• Ability to develop education and training programs for the research environment.
• Knowledge of and skill in pre- and post-award research grant and contract administration in an academic setting.
• Ability to speak in front of groups. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and productively with a wide variety of people.
• Skill in independently negotiating terms and conditions of grant awards and contracts.
• Knowledge and experience in strategic planning, operations assessment and quality improvement, policy and procedure development.
• Familiarity with the use of computer databases and electronic communications software.
• Strong quantitative analytic skills.
• Must be able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
• Must be self-directed and be able to develop and oversee complex projects.
