Connected and Intelligent Controls Software - Sr. Technical Specialist
CumminsAbout the role
Cummins Research and Technology is seeking a Technical Specialist to develop, prototype, and demonstrate innovative digital software and controls features with connected and intelligent algorithms. In this role, you’ll focus on controls software feature development, health monitoring, and the use of look-ahead and telematics data to optimize powertrain efficiency for fuel economy, reliability and productivity. This includes ICE, hybrid or BEV powertrain of medium and heavy duty vehicles. You’ll also collaborate with business units to integrate these solutions into production environments, ensuring a smooth transition from prototyping/PPT to marketplace.
Qualifications & Skills
- Ph.D. in Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Computer, Mechanical) with 3 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree with 5 years of industry experience.
- Proven track record in embedded controls, real-time software development, or machine learning/AI applications.
- Background in controls software or health monitoring and diagnostics feature development for ICE, hybrid, EV powertrain.
- Background in Engine, hybrid, or BEV powertrain systems, modeling and simulation in Matlab, model based controls development, and software development and prototyping through MIL/SIL/HIL and vehicle testing.
- Background in advanced controls and machine learning algorithms and applications is highly desired.
- Skilled in communication, presentation, documentation and teamwork.
- Desired to have certification in FUSA, CyberApps, MISRA, Model-Based Controls Development, DevOps, or Machine Learning.
In this role you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Designs and prototypes next-generation powertrain software connected digital features and controls algorithms for engine, hybrid and BEV applications in medium and heavy duty vehicles.
- Conducts rapid experimentation and proof-of-concept development to validate value and feasibility.
- Deploys embedded optimization or machine learning algorithms to enhance efficiency, reliability, and uptime e.g. predictive energy management for hybrid, SOH/RUL for battery or fault prediction for engine.
- Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across connected and intelligent functional discipline within R&T.
- Collaborates closely with business units and cross-functional teams—product managers/TPLs, system architects, system integration, FUSA, cybersecurity, CCS and data scientists—to transition prototypes into scalable, production-ready solutions.
- Collaborates with external partners and suppliers including national labs, academia and engineering service providers as needed to prototype and explore new software algorithms features and technology integration from V2X connectivity, vehicle automation (ADAS or autonomous), and fleet decarbonization eco-system.
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
