Position Overview 

 

This position is accountable for conducting a continuing program of traffic control planning and inspection to ensure maximum safety and convenience where construction, maintenance, or utility work is being performed under traffic.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts visual inspections both day and night of traffic control devices in construction and maintenance areas to ensure they are properly installed and operating.
  • Reviews and revises as necessary the traffic control plan for projects to ensure they comply with applicable standards.
  • Participates in preconstruction meetings to discuss and revise traffic control plans if necessary, so that all parties involved understand their responsibilities for providing proper traffic control.
  • Ensures that temporary traffic control devices meet standards and approves traffic control plans for those where no standard is applicable.
  • Coordinates the Illinois State Police Gabz (hireback) program.
  • Reviews and approves oversize / overweight permits that move through the district.
  • Performs duties in accordance with departmental safety policies and for the training of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) staff of highway traffic control standards, flagger, and spotter activities.
  • Reviews and approves the Serious Safety Hazard, Logo, and Tourist Oriented Directional Signs (TODS) programs.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR seven years of engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in highway construction traffic control and traffic control staging.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • 24 hour on-call availability.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
