DescriptionStaff SW Systems Engineer working on Switch engine will require the following activities.
Requirement Gathering:
Accept the Change Requests / Bugs / New Features assigned by the manager through a tracking tool which contains the required details (Detailed description, severity, priority, platforms to be worked on, targeted release, test / schedule impact etc.).Contact the relevant teams (hardware engineering, software engineering, testing, support) to get further details regarding the proposed requests.
Analysis and Design:
Study the complexity of the request: Asses which parts of source code needs to be modified or added. Inspect the processes and its dependencies which require the changes.Examine the compatibility with the required hardware and make sure the required resources are available w.r.t to the request.Determine and plan the course of the work items: Design the work flow structure into minor work items. Plan the course of the work items. Discuss the work flow with the manager to ensure the best approach. Estimate the time line to complete the task within the defined target date.  Coding and Testing:
Depending on the type of request received, design / implement / modify / enhance the embedded software for networking protocols or new hardware support.Depending on the requested release, use the source control tools to fetch / clone the required repository of source code onto a Linux-based build server. For any change requests on bug fixes, identify the problem and troubleshoot the code using a GDB (GNU debugger) / Core dumps / Kernel debugger, depending on the type of bug received. If the change request requires a user interface change, implement the CLI (Command Line Interface: Customized commands to work on Extreme Operating System on Network switches) commands using TCL / Python scripts.Apply the appropriate programming language (e.g. C/C++, Python, TCL) and data structure technology to implement the solution.Modify the source code, writing, refining and rewriting it as necessary.Compile the code changes using the appropriate tools (e.g. gcc, Python, make).Deploy the modified OS (with the code changes) on the required Extreme Network switch hardware which can be done by NFS mounting the build path of the modified code on to the network switch.Perform the manual tests to ensure the working of the code changes for the required functionality by configuring the hardware setup and analyze the performance of the software on the network switches.Perform unit testing and update the required functional specification documents w.r.t to the added / enhanced feature.Commit the changes on the local git repository and get the code changes reviewed through both technical design discussions and the code review tools (i.e. Review Board).Make changes recommended by feedback supplied in the the code review comments and redo the coding and testing process. Deployment:
Perform automated regression tests to ensure the existing functionalities work fine with the updated code.Upload the local repository changes on to the remote repository using the respective git command. Additional Tasks:
Perform peer code reviews to provide recommendations for the new or updated features designed and implemented by peers.Actively take part in team meetings to monitor the progress of the projects and discuss possible future assignments.Extreme Networks, Inc. (
