Grave is looking for an Underwriting Team Lead to be a player-coach, personally taking on complex new business quotes, supporting renewals, handling risk review, and managing a small team of Underwriters and Associate Underwriters. In addition to developing the members of your team, you’ll work closely with Revenue Operations, Sales, Account Management, Actuarial, and Data Science teams. As Gravie scales, the Team Lead plays a crucial role ensuring Underwriting processes are clearly documented, and followed closely to ensure accuracy, quality, and successful pricing of the business. You Will:· Leverage Gravie’s proprietary underwriting engine to offer competitive pricing for a first-of-its-kind health plan to employers and their employees across the country.· Work closely with your peer Team Leads to manage capacity balancing and assignment of new business quotes and renewals.· Manage and develop a small team (3-5), providing feedback, 1:1s and coaching to each individual in order to meet or exceed performance expectations for your team. · Review the Underwriter’s rate development for new business quotes and renewals, within their limits of authority, requesting additional analyses as necessary to accurately assess risk.· Identify opportunities to provide training to enhance the skill set of your team and the broader Underwriting function. Design and lead training sessions as appropriate.· Learn the ins and outs of Gravie’s proprietary underwriting engine and contribute to the improvement and evolution of Gravie’s underwriting practices.· Work closely with Sales and Account Management on strategies to support new business and the retention of existing customers.· As assigned, support key Underwriting projects designed to drive efficiencies and automation to support the rapid scaling of the business. · Work with Actuarial and Data Science to provide information and data to enhance cost prediction and risk assessment methodology. · Demonstrated commitment to core Gravie competencies of being authentic, curious, creative, empathetic, and outcome oriented. You Bring:· Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Insurance or other related majors· 5+ years of relevant group health fully insured, self-insured, level funded, and/or stop loss underwriting· Some management or formal mentoring experience· Strong analytical aptitude and problem-solving skills· Quantitative proficiency and a love of working with numbers· Strong Microsoft Excel skills and overall proficiency with common technology applications· Excellent attention to detail, a focus on quality and a continuous improvement mindset· An appetite for learning and quickly putting what you learn into practice· The ability to successfully communicate complex pricing information and underwriting decisions to colleagues on other teams and external audiences· A proven ability to operationalize a standard protocol · A flexible attitude and ability to work independently and as part of a team Extra Credit:· Background or interest working for a startup· Master’s degree or other related educational experience
