About the role

As a Manager – Statutory Accounting, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of statutory reporting operations within this startup P&C company.  This role requires a deep understanding of statutory accounting principles, regulatory requirements, and financial reporting standards specific to the insurance industry. Primary responsibilities include accurate and timely financial reporting, maintaining compliance with regulatory bodies, and implementing effective internal controls ensuring compliance with the SOX control framework.

What you’ll do

  • Play a critical role in establishing best practices and implementing operational procedures and internal controls for a start-up P&C insurance company.
  • Stay current with regulatory changes and requirements and serve as subject matter expert on statutory accounting principles and concepts.
  • Review supporting workpapers, reconciliations, and monthly journal entries to record premium and loss activity, investment results, commissions and taxes.
  • Perform financial statement analysis to articulate fluctuations.
  • Prepare Annual Statement filing, Quarterly Statutory Filings, premium tax returns and other Statutory filings including MD&A, IRIS and RBC ratios.
  • Prepare quarterly Stat to GAAP entries.
  • Develop, monitor and suggest improvements to internal controls tied to statutory reporting.
  • Seek to be well-informed on company financial transactions and work with team to ensure proper accounting and financial statement presentation.
  • Collaborate with other departments to optimize workflows and efficiently acquir information to support accounting entries and financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with Financial Planning & Analysis team to support budgets and forecasts and to explain variances from actual results.
  • Recommend and maintain software to support statutory reporting and develop integrations to existing enterprise applications i.e., Workday and Workiva Third Party Risk Management.

This might describe you

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Proven experience in statutory insurance accounting and reporting with a strong working knowledge of NAIC Statutory Accounting Principles or experience in insurance accounting gained through Public Accounting (4+ years), strong knowledge of internal controls and technical accounting, experience auditing or working for publicly traded insurance companies.
  • Well organized with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks.
  • Adhere to strict deadlines and be able to communicate status on tasks concisely.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with various levels of employees across functions.
  • Proficient in MS Office Products, especially Excel.
  • Experience with Workday ERP system, Workiva external reporting software.

Other things to note

  • This position can be worked remotely within the United States.
  • Familiarity with public company requirements, including Sarbanes Oxley and key regulations, if applicable. For SOX compliant roles, responsible for designing, executing, and documenting internal controls where they have been identified as owners to prevent errors in financial reporting, processes, and business operations. Including attestation to the completeness, accuracy, and compliance of all financial reporting data, where applicable.
