Wound Care Unit (Part-time, Day Shift)

Job Summary: The Clinical Nurse C-Inpatient Wound Care works in an expanded nursing role and performs duties under a standardized procedure. Serves as an expert clinician and resource nurse for management of conditions related to acute and chronic wounds, associated skin conditions, ostomies and impaired skin related to incontinence. Utilizes discretion and independent judgment to prioritize, coordinate, provide and document direct and indirect age-specific and developmentally appropriate quality patient-centered care. Performs the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) independently and in accordance with LLUMC-Murrieta's established Professional Practice Model (Duffy's Quality Caring Theory) to achieve proficient individualized physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellness and provide compassionate bereavement support as needed. Assesses, manages and treats patients with acute and chronic wounds and associated skin conditions. Makes rounds on patients with identified complex wounds, patients that are high risk for developing a pressure injury, patients receiving negative pressure wound therapy, hospital acquired pressure injuries, and other patients with wound, ostomy, and incontinent concerns as requested by staff. Consults with physicians and caregivers and makes recommendations for wound care and treatment. Collaborates with medical director and nursing leadership in setting and maintaining high standards for wound care treatment, prevention and ostomy care. Reviews new products and technologies in wound care and ostomy care. Makes recommendations to trial new products based on new evidence and research. Inspires and adopts the transformation of evidence into bed-side practice to optimize patient outcomes and ensures policies and practices standards and clinical skills are current. Collaborates with Staff Development and provides wound, ostomy and incontinence education to staff in a variety of venues. Applies theoretical concepts to clinical practice and exhibits self-motivation to continually expand knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in area of wound care treatment and prevention. Functions within the expectations of an accomplished professional nurse and represents nursing as an empowered profession readily embracing new knowledge, innovations and improvements. Provides a positive influence to facilitate change and optimize patient satisfaction and outcomes. Engages in opportunities to directly or indirectly influence decision-making for bedside clinical practice by supporting and participating in councils, committees, task forces and staff meetings. Exhibits refined interpersonal skills that portray professionalism and maximize excellence in customer service and safe patient care. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Associate of Science Degree in nursing required. If hired after January 1, 2021, enrollment in a Bachelor of Science Degree nursing program within six months of hire with expected completion two and a half years after enrollment required. Graduate from a Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse education program or equivalent required. Minimum of two years' experience required in acute care nursing required.  One year experience in wound care required. External hires into the CN-C position are granted one year to meet CN-C criteria outlined in the Clinical Nurse Ladder handbook. CN-C employees are eligible to be promoted into the CN-D classification when criteria outlined in the Clinical Nurse Ladder handbook and job specifications outlined in CN-D job description are met.

Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates advanced competencies and knowledge in wound, ostomy and incontinence care. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in area of specialty for the population served. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation required. Exhibits professional behavior at all times and works calmly and responds courteously when under pressure.
