Responsibilities

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides skilled nursing services to patients under the direction of a physician or midlevel provider, and provides a variety of related services to maintain a safe, therapeutic environment. The scope of the Licensed Practical Nurse includes, but is not limited to, nursing procedures and executing the patient’s nursing care plans, such as, sterile dressings, soaks, compresses, enemas, suppositories, oxygen therapy, catheterization, diabetic care, and pre- and post-operative care.

 

 

Knowledge of:

  • Medical equipment and instruments used in patient care
  • Safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
  • EMR system and general computer usage
  • HIPAA

 

Skills in:

  • Rooming patients, taking vital signs, administering medication and injections
  • Documenting and maintaining records and recording test results
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and the public
  • Following medical quality assurance and quality control standards

 

Ability to:

  • Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly
  • Be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations
  • React calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Understand, interpret, adapt, and apply instructions, guidelines, and procedures
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly to coworkers, physicians, and management
  • Practice civility and teamwork, demonstrating poise, tact and diplomacy
  • Perform onstage behavior at all times during patient interactions and in patient care areas

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Licensed Practical Nurse:

 

  • Adheres to LPN established scope of practice; observes clinical protocols, policies, and standards; provides basic patient care and treatments including but not limited to dressing wounds, giving enemas, alcohol rubs, and performing catheterizations.
  • Rooms patient, measures, and records patients' vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. Collects data related to the reasons for patient visits.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, tests and treatments and explain procedures. May assist in examinations, treatments, special tests and/or procedures where directed.
  • Observe patients and reporting changes in patients' conditions, such as adverse reactions to medication or treatment, and taking any necessary action.
  • Administer prescribed medications or start intravenous fluids and note times and amounts on patients' charts.
  • Where applicable, assemble and use equipment such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen suppliers.
  • Collect samples such as blood, urine, and sputum from patients, and perform routine laboratory tests on samples.
  • Sterilize equipment and supplies, using germicides, sterilizer, or autoclave.
