About the role

Overview

The Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Experience and Success will report to the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and serve as a critical member of the Office of Faculty Affairs.  The Senior Associate Dean will partner with the Dean, Vice Dean, and Wake Forest University School of Medicine’s (WFUSM) faculty to guide the organization through unprecedented growth and the expansion of the school’s academic mission across a wide and growing geography.  The Senior Associate Dean will be responsible for conceptualizing and implementing new, creative, and modernized programs, policies, and initiatives to support the career success and vitality of WFUSM faculty. This individual will serve as a resource for WFUSM faculty and leaders while overseeing programs designed to support faculty growth and development, such as: Recognition and Appreciation, Professional Growth and Development, Day-to-Day Experience, Wellness and Resilience, Coaching and Leadership, Loyalty and Retention, Diversity and Belonging, Transparency and Equity, Faculty Surveys and Feedback, and Faculty Mentoring.

Duties

The WFUSM Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Experience and Success will be responsible for developing and implementing evidence-based approaches to faculty professional development, as well as best practices in advancement and promotion, and faculty recruitment and retention. These programs will be implemented across a wide geography with teams supporting diverse needs for their stakeholders. 

 

  • Work collaboratively with the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs, WFUSM leadership, and the Office of Faculty Affairs Associate Deans to develop institutional programming that improves faculty performance and retention, the overall faculty experience, and leadership development. 
  • Lead and deliver the Office of Faculty Affairs’ programming in professional and/or leadership development. 
  • Develop strategies to periodically assess faculty interests and professional development needs, including assessing the current state of mentoring. Use this information to inform existing and future programming. 
  • Design and implement a robust faculty recognition and appreciation program, focusing on awards and recognition, communications, and broadcasting (internal and external), and contributing to faculty marketing and fundraising efforts. 
  • Partner with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Wellness to guide the organization’s approach to Wellness and Resilience for faculty in support of excellence, balance, and access to critical services. 
  • Ensure a transparent and equitable process for Standing Committee Elections and Faculty Awards/Recognition.
  • Develop relevant reports and metrics to measure and monitor the impact of faculty professional development programs.
  • Work with the Dean’s Office and the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Office to ensure integration of best practices for recruitment and retention activities and to optimize faculty belonging.
  • Contribute to scholarly products and work to increase WFUSM’s presence nationally.
  • All other duties as assigned. 

 

Key Characteristics 

Qualified candidates are those who possess a terminal (Ph.D. or M.D.) degree with knowledge and experience in faculty development. Administrative academic and clinical experience is preferred. Candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong organizational and time management skills. This position also requires the ability to collaborate and a commitment to teamwork. Candidate must be able to mentor and advise faculty members, as well as solicit faculty needs and develop programs and materials that meet their needs. 

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in advancing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion; ability to work with and support a diverse school of medicine community; a track record of strong interpersonal skills and ability to build positive professional relationships with diverse stakeholders at all levels in complex, highly dynamic environment; be strategically minded, able to think creatively around program goals and the steps necessary to achieve those goals; ability to act deliberately in sensitive situations; demonstrate strong conflict management skills; possess sound judgment and ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism; and demonstrate the ability to lead and to develop professional staff teams.
