Description

Overview

The Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library, part of The New York Public Library, serves patrons who are eligible to borrow materials from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) in the five boroughs of New York City and Long Island.  It also serves the general neighborhood community with NYPL services and programs.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Supervising Librarian, the Information Assistant will:
  • Provide reference service and instruction to library patrons of all ages using print, media, and computer resources, in person, over the telephone, and electronically
  • Perform community outreach throughout NYC and potentially Long Island to promote and increase public participation and use of library services
  • Become familiar with services and resources for the blind, visually impaired, reading disabled or physically disabled to serve patrons’ referral and information needs
  • Assist in planning and delivering library programs for children, teens and/or adults
  • Assist with collection development, application processing, and opening/closing procedures
  • Instruct patrons on the use of the Internet, computer applications and Library services, including troubleshooting assistive technology and digital book download issues
  • Ensure patrons follow library policies and procedures
  • May take responsibility for the facility, staff and operations in the absence of the Library Manager
  • Perform other related duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with a strong, well-rounded liberal arts background
  • Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse patronage
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team 

Required Skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse patronage
  • Strong computer skills, including Google calendar and Google docs
  • Strong community outreach and organizational abilities
  • Appreciation of literature and desire to encourage reading in others
Preferred Qualifications
  • Second language fluency
  • Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Experience or interest working with Children and Young Adults
