Sr. Machine Learning Engineer, Skylight

Who you are:

You are a machine learning engineer comfortable working at any point on the research to production cycle, from training and evaluating novel deep learning models with the latest tools and frameworks to creating highly performant production services. You are passionate about both Environmental AI and deep learning at scale.

Who we are:

At AI2 we build artificial intelligence for the common good. On Skylight (https://www.skylight.global/), our goal is to build the most advanced maritime intelligence platform in the world to help protect the world’s oceans for future generations. We apply the latest deep learning research in computer vision and natural language processing to satellite imagery and GPS data to help our users identify and respond to threats in their waters.

Your next challenge:

As a machine learning engineer on Skylight, you will design models that derive actionable intelligence from massive geospatial datasets from a diverse constellation of satellites. You will create bespoke deep learning architectures for object detection and time series classification, train those models on large datasets (billions of data points and terabytes of data), and deploy those models in production. In this role, you will work closely with the engineering team and some of the leading AI research scientists in the world (https://allenai.org/papers?award=1). Together we will build the next generation of maritime intelligence.

What you’ll need:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ability to read, write, debug, and optimize deep learning and machine learning code
  • Drive modern ML development of maritime intelligence applications
  • Deeply understand the entire ML software development lifecycle and how to advance it
  • Willingness to learn new technologies to accelerate programming (such as  LLMs)
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in CS/EE/Applied Mathematics/Statistics/ML/NLP or similar
  • Publications in top tier machine learning journals (NeurIPS, ICCV, ICLR, etc)
  • Experience in the maritime industry

Education/experience

  • Bachelor's degree in CS/EE/Applied Mathematics/Statistics/ML/NLP, or relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience with applied deep learning (transformers, deep CNNs, etc)
  • Expertise across machine learning, statistics, computer vision and time series analysis
  • Experience working in production environments (git, automated testing, ci//cd)
  • Expertise in Python
  • Experience training and deploying to GPUs
  • Familiarity working with cloud services (GCP, AWS, or Azure)
  • Experience with containerization (Docker)
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Experience with the complete model development cycle, including data set construction, training, tuning, evaluation, performance profiling and optimization, and monitoring.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The ability to observe details at close range.
  • Can work under deadlines.
