What This Job Involves: The HVAC Mechanic will install, service, and repair environmental-control systems in various commercial establishments including office buildings, department stores, and residential facilities. This role requires applying knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting, and structural layout to maintain optimal climate control systems. You will work with complex HVAC equipment ranging from small residential units to large commercial systems up to twenty tons cooling capacity in warehouses and factory buildings. The position follows Service Contract Act guidelines and may include duties from other classifications with equal or lower pay rates.

What Your Day-to-Day Will Look Like

  • Mount compressor and condenser units using hand tools while following blueprints and engineering specifications
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork and chassis parts using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment
  • Cut and bend tubing to proper specifications and thread pipes using machine or hand-threading equipment
  • Join components using sleeves, couplings, and unions with torch soldering to create complete refrigerant circuits
  • Install expansion valves, discharge valves, motors, compressors, and various control systems
  • Connect temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and power sources
  • Test system functionality by injecting refrigerant and monitoring pressure and vacuum gauges
  • Adjust controls for optimal operation and ensure prescribed operating pressures
  • Inspect for gas leaks using gauges or soap-and-water solutions
  • Wrap pipes in insulation and secure them with cement or wire bands
  • Replace defective components including breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring
  • Install air and water filters in completed installations
  • Use electrician's hand tools and test equipment for repairs and troubleshooting

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent education

  • Minimum two years of prior experience in HVAC repair and maintenance

  • Valid driver's license

  • Journeyman HVAC Mechanic "Duval County" License

  • Universal EPA Certification (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F)

  • Ability to use hand and power tools effectively

  • Knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting, and structural layout

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering specifications

  • Physical capability to perform installation and repair work in various environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional HVAC certifications beyond minimum requirements

  • Experience with commercial and industrial HVAC systems

  • Welding and metalworking experience

  • Electrical troubleshooting and repair skills

  • Experience with large capacity cooling systems (15-20 tons)

  • Familiarity with various environmental control systems and components
