JOB SUMMARY:

The Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist II is responsible for performing analysis of records for inpatient, outpatient, observation, outpatient surgery, Emergency Department, and clinic records. This position may assist with various technical functions that are completed by HIM Specialist I, including but not limited to birth and death certificates, release of information intake, scanning, indexing, importing, quality checks, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

List at least five major functional areas of responsibility (such as Personnel Management, Analysis/Reporting, Project Work, Customer Service, Budgetary Responsibilities, etc.) in descending order of importance.  Within each function, specify more basic tasks that compose the function.

Performs work as assigned as their major responsibilities:                                                    

  • Analysis of facility records (inpatient, outpatient, observation, outpatient surgery)
  • Facilitates input of demographic data to the Alaska Cancer Registry for patients newly diagnosed with cancer, as needed.

                                                                                                                                              

Release of Information Intake                                                                                                  

  • Routes requests for medical records, amendments, accounting of disclosures, patient portal received to the appropriate 
  • Evaluates basic requests for validity and logs requests as appropriate.
  • Processes patient walk-in requests assisting the patient to complete the authorization accurately and completely.

Performs customer service activities                                                                                          

  • Answering telephones of staff, patients
  • Assists staff and patients as needed

Process Birth Certificates in compliance with state regulations at select locations.                  

  • Meets with patients while in-house to facilitate completion of the birth certificate worksheet.
  • Accurately and timely input of birth certificate data in the state vital statistics system.                                                                                                                                                       

Process Death Certificates in compliance with state regulations as appropriate.                        

  • Receive death certificate worksheet in the HIM Department.
  • Provide death certificate to the appropriate physicians in accordance with policy.
  • Provide complete death certificate to funeral home or medical examiner upon completion.
  • Answers phone calls related to the status of ROI requests.

EDUCATION: High School Diploma

EXPERIENCE:

  • 1 years of HIM Specialist experience.
  • Experience working in/with a healthcare facility and/or familiarity with electronic medical records.

OTHER HELPFUL EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Understanding of medical terminology
  • Understanding of health information concepts

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to perform basic computer functions
  • Ability to perform basic data entry in Microsoft Word and excel is a plus
  • Frequent bending may be required for some duties
  • Frequent sitting and standing
  • Continuous oral communication and clear speech required
  • Continuous repetitive fing
