BASIC PURPOSE:
The Academic Success Coach helps undergraduate students develop skills, behaviors and habits that contribute to success and persistence at the University. These include academic goal setting, learning strategies, time management and organization, self-regulation, and self-efficacy.
STATUS:
This is a 20 hour per week, 40 week/year position from August 15 – May 15. In addition to an hourly wage, compensation also includes tuition remission for an Assumption University graduate program. Position includes Graduate Tuition Remission for up to 3 courses (9 credit hours) during the fall and spring semesters. If returning for a second year, 2 courses (6 credit hours) for the one summer semester or a total of 8 courses (24 credits) per year (fees not included). Courses are not covered for the 2nd summer of assistantship. Must be enrolled in graduate studies Assumption University. Position starts August 15, 2025.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Foster persistence and graduation of undergraduate students who are on Academic Warning, Probation or Conditional Enrollment.
- Help first-year students transition from High School to Higher Education.
- Provide instruction on general study skills such as time management, effective notetaking, reading and writing strategies, and test preparation/test taking strategies and empower students to become more proactive learners.
- Monitor progress of students in caseload with check-ins, scheduled meetings and/or proactive outreach and communication, responding to student questions, concerns, and needs.
- Prepares students for faculty advising meetings and course selection, reviews all course syllabi, tracks grades throughout the semester, and refers students to peer tutors, professor office hours, counseling services, accessibility services or other areas as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality of students in caseload, University databases and reports.
- Maintain accurate data points and statistics for students served.
- Facilitate academically focused workshops offered by the Academic Support Center.
- Participate in tutor training each semester to understand the role of the Academic Support Center in the success of assigned students.
- Meet regularly with the Director and Assistant Director of the Academic Support Center.
- Serve as a member of the Academic Success Program Team, meeting monthly to monitor student progress.
- Perform other job-related duties, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be willing to contribute actively to the mission of the University as well as show respect for the Catholic and Assumptionist identity of Assumption University.
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Must be accepted into and enrolled as current graduate student at Assumption University in good academic standing.
- Possess extraordinary interpersonal skills to provide an empathetic and individualized approach, as well as excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- The ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and maturity in handling sensitive information, student interaction, and community relations.
- A commitment to student development within the context of a population inclusive of racial, ethnic, cultural, and economic difference.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
- Knowledge of WebAdvisor and Brightspace preferred.
SCOPE:
- Interacts on a frequent, daily basis with students, and as necessary with faculty and administrators.
Work typically between 9:00AM and 5:00PM, however some evening and weekends as needed for department events, presentations, or other University events.
COMPENSATION:
- Position includes Graduate Tuition Remission for 3 courses (9 credit hours) during the fall and spring semesters. If returning for a second year, 2 courses (6 credit hours) for the one summer semester or a total of 8 courses (24 credits) per year (fees not included). Courses are not covered for the 2nd summer of assistantship. Must be enrolled at Assumption University.
