Summary

The Chemistry Technician provides technical, operational and analytical support to the Chemistry Department by performing surveillances, maintaining safe industrial and radiological work practices, understanding and implementing procedural and regulatory requirements. Performs activities under direct or general supervision depending on the complexity of work. Upon completion of selected courses and Job Qualification Cards (JQC) along with mandatory qualifications as outlined in the Chemistry Training Program description, the Technician will be assigned to fulfill department needs in an assignment area.

(Automatic progression to Chemistry Technician Senior is not based solely on time in position as a Chemistry Technician.)

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Basic knowledge of general chemical concepts, mathematics (including algebra and trigonometry), basic physics, laboratory techniques and practices required.
• Good oral and written communication skills required.
• Ability to follow written procedures required.
• Basic understanding of how nuclear power plants operate required.
• A four-year Bachelor's degree in a Science or Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university or Navy Nuclear Power Training highly desirable.

Nuclear Requirements
Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.
This is a condition of employment at PVNGS.
Roles and Responsibilities defined in Policy 1503 and implementing policy guide are applicable to all PVNGS employees.
Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage. This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities.

Major Accountabilities

• Assists in the implementation of analytical procedures as directed.
• Participates in the laboratory analytical control program.
• Performs chemical/radiochemical analytical procedures and sampling.
• Assists in testing new or modified analytical procedures as directed.
• Operates radiochemical analytical instrumentation, such as multi-channel gamma spectrophotometer and liquid scintillation counter, as directed.
• Operates, calibrates and maintains laboratory analytical instrumentation, such as the atomic absorption spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, ion chromatograph, total organic carbon analyzer, UV visible spectrophotometer, as well as process on line monitors, as directed.
• Participates in training programs and seminars and successfully completes documented training program requirements.
• Performs sampling and analyses on selected qualified tasks as permitted by the INPO accredited training program.
