What You Will Contribute To Altos 

Reporting to the VP Scientific Operations (Sci Ops), the Sr. Director of Scientific Operations is a key position that provides institutional oversight and management of shared scientific resources for the Bay Area Institute of Science (BAI) of Altos Labs. 

Who You Are 

  • Partners with VP Sci Ops on development and execution of a strategic plan to track scientific equipment & resource utilization across Altos. 
  • Manages a team of Managers, Sr. Managers, and Directors who lead individual scientific innovation hubs and shared scientific resources at BAI.
  • Play a lead role for BAI on the development and execution of new programs - like Altos hubs, access to external cores, and CRO workflows, supporting a range of Altos Labs research needs. 
  • Lead and participate in projects and process development and improvement activities by serving on  cross-functional teams. Seek ways to increase the efficiency of scientific operations processes.  
  • Responsible for managing equipment acquisition, software licensing, and service support contracts across BAI shared resources, and coordinates efforts across all Altos laboratories. 
  • Leads the maintenance of operational databases of equipment and scientific resources at the BAI location and coordinates similar databases for all Altos locations. 
  • Responsible for developing the annual operating budget for BAI Sci Ops components of the basic sciences research operations portfolio under the Science Integration, Innovation and Insight (SI3)overarching organization.
  • Partners with the VP of Scientific Operations and Sr. VP of SI3 in supporting the operational needs of inter institutional research and programmatic efforts. 
  • Collaborate with Global Operations, local operations team, and fellow Scientific Operations Leads at the other sites to ensure adoption and compliance with standard policies, procedures, processes, and technologies to promote consistency. In addition, serve as backup for Sci Ops leads at the other sites. 
  • Key interface with EH&S, Procurement, Finance, and other relevant departments to assure effective resource management and research oversight compliance.
  • Partners with the VP of Scientific Operations and global operations leaders to develop, implement, and execute processes to deliver financial, human resources, procurement, and licensing/ intellectual property services.  
  • Cultivate and manage a culture which promotes inclusion and equity.
  • Key liaison with BAI Principal Investigators to facilitate the MTA and research materials licensing agreements in partnership with the Altos Legal team.
  • BAI Sci Ops lead re: space planning / project management for lab and shared resource space utilization.
  • Lead BAI Scientific Operations related projects involving cross functional project teams that span missions and corporate areas.
  • Responsible for monitoring, aggregating and reporting on project timelines for all Sci Ops projects for BAI.
  • Prioritization of deliverables; actively manages issues, issue escalation and proactively identifies alternative strategies in collaboration with hub team members to develop and implement risk mitigation strategies which impact key milestones for initiatives in service of the Altos mission.
  • Prepares high-quality reports (financial, project, etc.) for VP Sci Ops and Sr. VP SI3 on program and project status and issues.
