This is a "Road Warrior" position and requires extensive travel (up to several months on the road at a time), without the opportunity to go home. However, we do make every effort to get our employees as much home time as possible.
Assistant Operators are responsible for the safe operation and care of Nordco Rail Services rail flaw detection vehicles. Assistant Operators will be evaluated based on performance metrics used by their field supervision as well as by the customer. The responsibility of Nordco Rail Flaw detection team is to understand the expectations of the customer and work to meet or exceed expectations.
1 REPORTING

2 ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Remain well versed in and practice all railroad and highway safety and operating procedures. This includes passing and maintain all on track safety training and customer required background checks.
- Drive NRS rail flaw detection vehicles on road and on rail in support of rail flaw detection activities.
- Takes direction from and assists Chief Operator during testing activities.
- Under guidance of the Chief Operator, Field Manager and Equipment Manager, maintains the NRSIT rail flaw detection vehicle.
- Ensures the vehicle has all required documentation including IFTA sticker, registration, and insurance etc.
- Ensures the vehicle has current annual certifications for DOT and hy-rail FRA.
- Partners with Chief Operator to maintain 5S
- Maintains the vehicle's inventory by submitting monthly inventory reports and maintenance reports following specified guidelines.
- Submit all required reports to Field Manager & Field Ops Manager monthly.
- Maintains and submits accurate driver log, fuel reports and any other required documentation.
- Records failure data when a component failure occurs. In addition, record possible reasons for failure whenever possible.
- Inspects vehicle and carriage equipment regularly and brings findings to chief operator.
- Grease, lube, and tighten bolts, repair or have repaired defective parts on ultrasonic testing carriage as necessary – any adjustments or repairs would be under supervision of Chief Operator.
- Maintains accurate business expense records.
- Must conduct themselves in a customer friendly & Professional manner at all times.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
3 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
3.1 Education
- Minimum high school diploma or GED. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical-related discipline preferred. Mechanical technical training a plus. Level I Ultrasonic Testing certification also a plus
3.2 Experience
- One or more years of professional driver experience preferred.
3.3 Technical Skills
- Preferred to have and maintain a valid Class B (or Class A) CDL with Air Brake Endorsement. Must continually meet NRSIT and DOT driving standards.
