We're building a more trustworthy Internet. Come join us.

Director, Security Operations

As the Director for Security Operations, you will be the person chiefly responsible for defending Fastly from malicious attacks, ensuring we have the tools and skills to prevent those attacks from the outset and respond effectively when they occur. We are looking for a senior leader who gets things done, with the experience to lead our Vulnerability Management, Detection & Response, and Security Engineering teams. You’ve got skills to grow and mentor a skilled security team, and the ability to define and drive the overall defensive security strategy for the company. You will work cross-functionally with engineering, product, and compliance to get alignment and implement that strategy.

What You'll Do:

  • Serve as the leader of three teams focused on:
    • Monitoring for suspicious activity, investigating, and responding appropriately
    • Identification of security weaknesses and ensuring reasonable resolution timelines
    • Building and maintaining systems that allow us to operate securely at scale
  • Think strategically about security improvements across Fastly and oversee delivery
  • Build relationships with other teams to influence positive security change; work with our security architecture, engineering, and compliance teams to understand risk and gaps and develop plans to address those gaps.
  • Grow diverse teams and ensure the personal development of your team members; act as both coach and cheerleader for your teams
  • Report directly to the Chief Information Security Officer and work with the CISO to shape Fastly security priorities
  • Regularly evaluate our environment, capabilities and processes through table-top and real-world testing

What We're Looking For:

  • Proven track record of leading Detection and Response (D&R), CSIRT, Vulnerability Management, and Security Engineering.
  • Experience leading company responses to large scale security attacks and compromises, and with the tools necessary to detect and respond to attacks.
  • Experience building a mature, automated, and risk based vulnerability management program
  • Someone who's been around the block a few times: 10+ years of experience in security, with a strong engineering background and 5 or more of those years spent in management roles.
  • Prior experience managing other managers, with an ability to inspire others and shape high-stakes outcomes.
  • Exceptional communications and writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex security topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong understanding of evolving cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, and attack vectors
  • The ability to form strong partnerships with diverse company stakeholders, particularly fastly engineering leadership, to ensure security operations plans are effectively integrated into company roadmaps.
  • A mix of cloud security and on-premise infrastructure security (we're both a cloud provider and a user of cloud services)
  • Comfort in a multiple operating system environment. Android, iOS, Linux, MacOS, and Windows all live here

We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:

  • A history of speaking at conferences
  • Experience writing blog posts
  • Actively contributing to open source projects
