Summary

This is a skilled, technical/mechanical position responsible for performing the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment.

Examples of duties

  1. Performs preventive maintenance required by vehicle and equipment manufacturer including law enforcement vehicles, aerial devices, fire apparatus, medium-heavy duty trucks, generator units, and off-road equipment. Will routinely lift and position tools and supporting equipment up to 75 lbs. for safety reasons. Will have to work from a ladder and be capable of lifting component assembly weighing up to 75 lbs. from the vehicle to a workbench. Will also be required to operate aerial devices from their stowed to fully extended heights from both ground and platform controls. This duty is performed daily.
  2. Diagnoses equipment failures, orders parts and makes necessary repairs on a variety of equipment. This duty is performed daily.
  3. Documents all work activities by describing the cause of failure, repair correction, and the time involved to complete each repair. This duty is performed daily.
  4. Housekeeping duties performed for immediate work area and assigned facility to ensure proper maintenance of tools and to provide a clean and safe work area. Performs road calls and emergency repairs and will be radio dispatched to a location of vehicle breakdown to assess whether type of unit can be repaired on site or a wrecker is necessary to tow it to the Fleet maintenance facility. Writes (documents) road call reports accurately and completely. This duty is performed daily.
  5. Communicates on radio and telephone for service calls. Processes new vehicles/equipment and prepares vehicles/equipment for auction. This duty is performed daily.
  6. Performs minor repairs on shop equipment. This duty is performed daily.
  7. Assists the other technicians with technical direction on various types of repairs. This duty is performed daily.
  8. Delivers or picks up equipment and component assemblies from repair shop and vendors. This duty is performed daily.
  9. When required, will work on light duty vehicles, turf equipment and other implements. This duty is performed daily.
  10. Customer Service will be occasionally performed concerning a type of repair or problem by telephone or in person. Communicates clearly and courteously to assist others. Assists Apprentice Fleet Technicians and Assistant Fleet Technicians with technical direction on various types of repairs. This duty is performed daily.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be able to read and write
  • Must have minimum one year in the field of automotive, truck, fire, aerial devices and construction mechanics, or equivalent combination of work-related training and experience, or a technical degree/certificate from an accredited institution specializing in the automotive/truck industry.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida operators driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and a learning permit for a CDL before the first day of work.
  • Must obtain a valid Florida commercial driver's license, CDL Class B, within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must obtain motor vehicle air-conditioning systems (MACS) Section 609 or equivalent certification in use of refrigerant recycling equipment within twelve (12) months of hire date or promotion
  • Must acquire and maintain an ASE certification in medium/heavy truck brakes (T4) within twelve (12) months of hire date or promotion
  • Must acquire and maintain an ASE certification in auto brakes (A5) within twelve (12) months of hire date or promotion.
  • Must acquire and maintain an EVT Law Enforcement Vehicle Maintenance (L1) certification within twenty-four (24) months of hire date or promotion.
