Position Overview
This position is accountable for performing geotechnical investigations required for roadway and structure improvements. The incumbent utilizes the drill rig crew consisting of drill rig technicians and a highway maintainer to conduct Standard Penetration Test (SPT) sampling, Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), and Pavement Cores (PC) to collect geotechnical information. The information gathered is presented to the district Geotechnical Engineer for the purposes of Structure Geotechnical and Roadway Geotechnical Report writing and the completion of Pavement Investigation Reports. The position is accountable for coordination with various internal and external contacts including but not limited to Central Management Services (CMS) and private sector mechanics, various operations yards in order to supply traffic control required for boring and coring operations, and utility locators to ensure boring locations are not in conflict with existing utilities.
Essential Functions
- Plans, coordinates, and directs subsurface investigations and pavement coring.
- Collects field data and performs field tests.
- Prepares formal boring logs, subsurface profiles, and data summary reports.
- Ensures equipment is properly maintained and necessary supplies are available.
- Maintains subsurface data records.
- Trains, motivates, and evaluates staff.
- Foster and promote a culture of productivity within the sub-unit. Work with Geotechnical Engineer to identify and eliminate barriers to production.
- Performs duties in compliance with department safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conductive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineer, or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience OR seven years of engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to direct the work of subordinate personnel and keep subordinates productive.
- Ability to balance the needs of multiple projects simultaneously.
- Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering and the application of engineering techniques of materials testing.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Rudimentary knowledge of and ability to operate equipment.
