Post-doctoral Researcher in Language Development and Processing
University of WashingtonAbout the role
Description
The Language Development and Processing (LDP) Lab, directed by Dr. Naja Ferjan Ramírez, is looking for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to join a team studying the role of language input in language development across cultures. The team studies how infants and young children learn one, two, or multiple languages using a variety of methods, but with an emphasis on long-form recordings. We are interested in how variation in children's early language environments contributes to language development, and in applying this knowledge to the development of language interventions.
This post-doctoral researcher will be housed in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington. The post-doctoral researcher will also spend a significant amount of time at the Institute of Learning & Brain Sciences (I-LABS). The post-doctoral researcher will work closely with a research team of linguists, psychologists, neuroscientists, educators, and physicists from I-LABS. The post-doctoral researcher will be a key contributor in all aspects of research (planning, data collection, data analysis, academic writing, outreach), and will be encouraged to develop independent projects that fall within the scope of the lab’s mission. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to mentor other lab members at various levels of research career, and build collaborations with other labs in the Department of Linguistics, at I-LABS, across the University of Washington and beyond.
The position is full-time, with an initial appointment for one year, and renewal is possible pending satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The position is open immediately. The base salary range for this position will be $5,705-$6,250 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD or foreign equivalent in a field such as linguistics, development psychology, speech and hearing sciences, or neuroscience. Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team are critical for the success of this research. Desired qualifications are experience collecting and analyzing data from long-form recordings, experience in working with large longitudinal datasets, proficiency in analytical coding environments (e.g., R, Python), proficiency in Spanish, and prior experience in intervention research. The successful candidate must have US work authorization.
