Position Overview

 

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Highway Maintenance Lead Worker. Under direct supervision of the Standard Sign Chief, the successful candidate will serve as a lead worker for standard sign fabrication and delivery crews assigned to the Highway Sign Shop Section. This position also serves as lead worker for the facility in the absence of the Standard Sign Unit Chief and performs sign blank reclamation, fabrications, preparation functions including the operation of equipment and the application of applying sign messages.

Essential Functions

• Serves as a lead worker in direction, materials, equipment, activities required for the production of standard sign substrates and the fabrication of completed highway signs for delivery to all highway districts throughout the state.
• Leads and performs labor relating to equipment operations of standard sign reclamation and fabrication machinery functions.
• Leads and instructs crews in the safe use, handling, storage and maintenance of equipment and materials in accordance with the department’s safety code, applicable policies, regulations, and manufacturers recommendations.
• Motivates and evaluates subordinates.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years of high school.
• Requires two years of experience performing highway construction and maintenance work.
• Requires possession of a Class “A” CDL with appropriate endorsements, including air brakes.
• Requires one year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.
