Job Description

Under the general supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician II performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with department policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. The Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for providing pharmacy services, including, but not limited to preparing pharmaceuticals, distributing pharmaceuticals, performing inventory control, compliance audits, financial transactions, providing customer service, and maintaining pharmacy records. A Pharmacy Technician II must be registered through the Board of Pharmacy and certified by a Board-approved certifying body.  

A Pharmacy Technician II may not administer medications or vaccines, perform drug utilization review; conduct clinical conflict resolution; contact prescribers concerning prescription drug order clarification or therapy modification; provide patient counseling; or perform dispensing process validation. In order to be eligible for promotion into the Pharmacy Technician II position, one must demonstrate an acceptable level of performance and satisfactory completion of competency assessments. Achieving or exceeding the expectations of the current level does not automatically qualify individuals for advancement to the next level.
 

II. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

• Participates in non-complex sterile and non–sterile medication preparation activities:
• Prepares oral liquids and other extemporaneous dosage formulations following a master formulary sheets or label.
• Practices aseptic techniques, including handwashing methods and garbing procedures
• Completes fingertip and media fill testing representative of the pharmacy’s most complicated sterile preparation
• Prepares sterile compounds following a recipe or production instructions.
• Operates advanced, innovative technology to assist in preparation and documentation of sterile products.

Partakes in medication dispensing activities:

• Performs prescriptions transfers between pharmacies inclusive of controlled substance in schedule class IV only.
• Request refill authorizations from the prescriber or prescriber’s agent, and can receive new or omitted prescription information, with the approval of the pharmacist.
• Receives new prescriptions or orders, enters patient data and medications for pharmacist review.
• Handles and delivers outpatient medications to the bedside.
• Assist patients with prescription intake and over-the-counter medication sales, obtaining pharmacist approval where required or requested.

Performs financial transaction activities:

• Prepares patient billing information, bills third party prescription benefits, and troubleshooting insurance issues.
• Selects and uses pharmacy pay codes, payers and plans appropriate to each type of transaction.

Completes inventory management activities:

• Processes Schedule II-IV substances and all transactions related to properly securing, storing, and maintaining all required records.
• Takes accountability for medication management in their assigned patient care area.

Engages in customer service and triage activities:

• Relays to the patient or responsible person the pharmacist’s “offer to counsel”.
• Assist with coordinating high priority prescriptions or orders through the pharmacy dispensing process.
• Triage calls or requests and serves as a liaison to all staff calling the pharmacy.
• Responsible for ensuring accurate generation of reports to ensure removal, transfer or return of medications.
• Communicates effectively with other members of the healthcare team regarding requests, missing medications or issues for patients while balancing established distribution workflows.
• Maintains collaborative, team-based relationships with peers and colleagues to foster a positive work environment and effectively help working groups achieve their goals.
