Position Summary

Responsible for providing creative concepts and strategy, design thinking, and design execution in support of School of Public Health communications, marketing, admissions, education and research-focused needs and materials, adhering to standards, guidelines and updated brand. Design needs may include, but are not limited to graphic illustrations to support communication efforts, brochures and other print needs, signage, emails, direct mail, website, video and social media. The art director will work to ensure that designs support brand strategies for WashU Public Health programs and WashU, and school’s annual business objectives. The art director will oversee design and production of printed materials, including the school’s planned magazine. Will work closely with internal team members, external agencies and production vendors.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • As the school’s graphic designer and art director, works independently to create original design, and contribute substantially to product experience with innovative visual storytelling, compelling design and typography and graphics.
  • In collaboration with director of communications and other members of communications team, and other teams as assigned, create compositions that influence how content is presented, shared and understood. Interacts with members of the comms and other teams to develop such concepts, and execute and present assigned project(s) to internal team members.
  • Leads the creative development of annual School of Public Health magazine and of other print and digital marketing, advertising and other communications that support programs across the school. Develop the overall layout and production design for such projects. Involves leading work to create original brochures, publications, marketing and/or electronic communications.
  • Oversees print projects from the initial phase of project specifications, to design, to the final stages of production and distribution. Serves as design liaison when working with outside design services partners on projects. Involves coordinating projects with director of communications and other directors (admissions education, research) to understand the scope of projects and define what is required, including print estimates, job scheduling, and the reviewing of proofs through final delivery.
  • Creative Process Management: Owns the creative process as a method to efficiently and effectively move projects through the department. Ensures that the steps in the creative process are being followed and work to continue to improve the process to ensure client satisfaction and effective creative execution. Works to ensure that visual concepts are aligned with brand guidelines and messaging, and share knowledge on this with other members of school as they build websites, create publications or take other steps involving brand.
  • Leads on smaller tactical projects, and performs other duties as assigned.
