Compensation Range:

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Responsibilities:

The Quality and Safety Specialist I works in close coordination with and directly supports the Director of Quality, Safety, and Patient Experience. This role involves direct interaction with patients regarding care delivery, utilizing independent judgment to effectively resolve issues. Additionally, the Specialist I provides essential support for the department’s quality and safety initiatives. They ensure adherence to programs, policies, and practices, maintaining compliance with all mandated regulatory requirements and documenting legal regulations that may affect organizational policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Patient Safety Event Management:

  • Leads departmental response to patient safety events involving the department.
  • Independently coordinates and conducts investigations of patient events, utilizing the University event reporting database, written communications, electronic medical record, and patient, staff, and faculty interviews.
  • Responsible for all standardized internal departmental QA Reviews (QAR) on entries, when applicable. Facilitates Interdepartmental Quality Reviews (IQR) when RLDatix events require matrixed investigation and intervention.
  • Facilitates escalation of patient safety events to NYS NYPORTS reporting system, when applicable.
  • Participates in internal and external investigations, when necessary.
  • Tracks and trends current barriers to patient safety.

Patient Relations and Experience:

  • Acts as primary patient relations liaison for the department. Leads collaboration with patient relations departments to address the needs of patients across the service line.
  • Provides excellent customer service to patients and families, including service recovery when necessary.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills when communicating on behalf of the department.
  • Demonstrates Patient- and Family-Centered Care and ICARE values at all times.
  • Leads departmental response to all patient feedback, including patient complaints and care compliments.
  • Establishes timely communication plan for complaint and feedback resolutions, including collaboration with provider offices, health information management, patient financial services, and patient relations, when applicable.
  • Tracks trends in patient experience needs across the service line.

Quality Assurance and Morbidity & Mortality Conferences:

  • Leads all department QA Morbidity and Mortality conferences. Gathers and prepares all cases, agenda items, and presentation materials for QA Physicians, Department Chair, and Quality Leadership review.
  • Completes QA reviews for all cases in a timely fashion, including incorporation of clinical events from the medical record, active faculty and resident discussions, and cited literature results.
  • Responsible for tracking attendance and providing timely submission of minutes and reports.

Provider Credentialing and Evaluation:

  • Independently tracks new provider recruitment and dates of appointment for QA training completion within required timeframe.
  • Independently completes all Ongoing Provider Practice Evaluations (OPPE) within appropriate timeframes.
  • Coordinates with affiliate quality offices to ensure all approved faculty evaluations are submitted to the office of Medical Credentialing Services.
  • Collaborates with leadership to determine, abstract, and analyze additional provider quality metrics when necessary.
