About the Department

The Ben May Department for Cancer Research was formally established in 1951 with funds provided by Alabama businessman and philanthropist Ben May. The work done by the collection of laboratories within the Ben May Department for Cancer Research has advanced cancer treatment by providing answers to fundamental biological questions and by finding applications for groundbreaking scientific discoveries. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.


Job Summary

The job provides basic technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Complies with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Principal contribution is providing routine or standardized laboratory or administrative support necessary for research labs in the Ben May Department.

Responsibilities

  • Pick up used glassware, plasticware, and assorted utensils from laboratory.

  • Clean items by hand and using mechanical dishwashers.

  • Dry appropriate items (plasticware) in dryer.

  • Autoclave selected items as requested by research staff.

  • Return clean items to proper storage areas.

  • Check for proper operation of washers, autoclaves, and dryers; notify appropriate staff of problems.

  • Install liquid dishwashing detergent (5-gallon containers) as needed.

  • Maintain log of users on autoclaves.

  • Replace printout tapes as needed for autoclaves and dishwashers

  • This job provides technical and administrative support in a laboratory environment performing basic laboratory techniques, research and analysis under direction.

  • Complies with institution, state and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
