Under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, or NP, the Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses with evaluation, management, and treatment of patients during office visits and other tasks related to the visit consistent with his/her training and skills. His/her primary roles are to assure efficient patient flow through the office; perform dressing changes and minor debridements, assist with in-office procedures, maintain a neat, clean, and safe patient care areas, and promote patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional manner. The Medical Assistant will promote and adhere to all regulatory and safety standards; OSHA, JCAHO, Infection Control, HIPAA, as well as maintaining required certifications, and core competencies.

Assures efficient patient flow through the office.

Responsible for all aspects of the rooming process:
- Checks patient’s identification using (2) patient identifiers – name and DOB
- Reviews and reconciles medications
- Performs vital signs including a pain level assessment, height, weight, and smoking status.

Prepares patient as to what to expect during the visit.

Performs complex burn/wound care including wound vacs and debridement under the direction of the clinical provider.

Anticipates/sets up special equipment and/or supplies needed for the visit.

Provides appropriate patients with ASD questionnaire and reports results to provider.

Alerts the physician or nurse practitioner when the patient is ready and communicates pertinent clinical information.

Assists the physician or nurse practitioner with all aspects of the exams, procedures, and treatments.

Adheres to hand hygiene and standard precaution guidelines.

Provides age- appropriate care to patients in practice setting and documents data per practice protocols.

Collects specimens during visit and as applicable:
- Blood (phlebotomy)
- Finger sticks
- Assists with obtaining culture for MRSA and VRE

Assists patient through checkout process when visit is complete.

Cleans and prepares room for next patient.

Assists with all in-office surgical procedures:
- Acts as a resource to both patients and surgeons.
- Prepares procedure consents and ensures completion
- Ensure time-outs are performed and documented
- Sets-up exam room in preparation for procedure ensuring all necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies are present (i.e., excision trays and cautery units)
- Passes necessary instruments
- Observes procedure, monitoring equipment, and troubleshooting any operational issues
- Provides emotional support to patient during procedures

Provides post-operative teaching materials and ensures all questions are answered
- Pamphlets
- Wound care instructions
- Wound care cards
- Provides patient with necessary dressing supplies

Ensures booking for OR and office procedures are followed.

Responds to patient-related inquiries and triages as necessary.

Prepares and transports all patient specimens to appropriate clinical departments.

Makes postoperative patient phone calls to check on patient status and answer any questions.

Responds to Patient Gateway messages and prescription requests.

Assists physicians with all facets of laser patient care within the office setting.
Participation includes:
- Patient preparation and positioning
- Set-up and operation of equipment
- Pre-procedure patient prep
- Patient monitoring
- Post-procedure patient care (dressings and teaching)

Oversees safety procedures for the use of lasers in outpatient treatments including:
- Use of eye protection for clinicians and patients
- appropriate use of other laser-related safety gear
- Post laser signage and place safety glasses outside of the treatment room

Performs specialized procedures under the direction of MD/NP such as suture/staple removal, perform tissue expander fills, remove surgical drains, and apply steri-strips.

Performs designated tasks related to tracking test results and may communicate normal test results to patients as directed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or nurse.
