Job Description:

Part-Time Enrichment Instructor (5 weeks at Harvey Mudd College):

The instructor will facilitate and mediate two sections of an enrichment class two days a week. This position is temporary and subject to termination at will, with or without notice or cause.

Program
Description:

The Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound Program is a federally funded program designed to help low-income, potential first-generation college bound students generate the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of secondary education, and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. High school students from the San Gabriel Valley participate in Upward Bound during the school year and the summer. During the academic year, students participate in three Saturday programs a month on the Harvey Mudd College Campus and a weekly study hall session once a week at their high school. During the summer, students live and study residentially at Harvey Mudd College. A staff of residential instructors and tutors led by a residential coordinator live with and supervise the students.


Job Summary:

During a three-hour block, the instructor will lead two 90 minutes workshops with groups roughly twenty-five students in each workshop. The instruction does not require any assessment or grading but does require a lively, extroverted leader who can design an engaging series of activities/lessons and manage twenty-five high school students in a high-energy setting.

Calendar: Dates and times may be modified

The instructor will work the following week dates June 23- July 25 (2 days a week; either Mondays & Tuesdays or Thursdays & Fridays) for three hours a day; (12:30 PM – 3:45 PM)


Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience or significant classroom experience
  • Personal and/or professional experience with low-income, potential first-generation college bound youth
  • Knowledge of assigned field
  • Possession of personal characteristics appropriate for instruction (such as sensitivity, sense of humor, resilience, compassion, and the ability to establish good rapport with program participants)
  • Knowledgeable in designated class topic; ability to handle large groups.
