Position Summary:

The Senior Health Physicist will work closely with the RSO to develop and execute Nusano’s radiation protection program while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations. This position will provide hands-on and strategic support to Radiance Lab and Production Facility as needed. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research while maintaining the highest standards of safety. This role reports to the Radiation Safety Officer.

 

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Help develop and implement radiation safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide health physics support to Nusano’s radiation programs.
  • Oversee performance of routine radiation surveys.
  • Support the safe handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Provide radiation safety worker training, including radiological related on-the-job training for Nusano staff.
  • Oversee daily calibration checks and ensure logs for radiation monitoring instruments are kept up to date.
  • Manage the radioactive materials inventory, including receipt and tracking of radioactive material.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with radiation safety standards.
  • Oversee Nusano’s dosimetry program.
  • Perform dose calculations and radiological evaluations as necessary.
  • Investigate incidents and accidents involving radiation exposure and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Provide technical guidance to projects, programs, and personnel to ensure compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and laws.
  • Develop technical radiological monitoring and dose assessment reports.
  • Participate in team meetings and provide regular on-site presence.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation protection, physical science, engineering, biological sciences, or related field.
  • 7 + years of experience and demonstrated knowledge of radiation physics, principles and practices of radiation protection, survey instrumentation and analysis and applicable rules, best practices for safe use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.
  • Experience with operation of a Radiation Safety Program at an Accelerator-type facility.
  • Experience measuring and evaluating radiological conditions affecting workers and the environment using radiation detection equipment.
  • Proficient computer literacy skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Graduate-level degree in health physics, radiation protection, physical science, engineering, biological sciences, or related degree with 5 + years experience in a senior health physics role.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Health Physics, the American Board of Medical Physics, the American Board of Radiology, or an equivalent certifying body.
  • Strong knowledge of regulations and applicable standards (e.g. 10 CFR 20, 10 CFR 30).
  • Technical experience supporting dose assessment and radiation emergency response during drills and exercises.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work to be conducted in an office environment, laboratories, engineering R&D, and/or production environment.
  • Must be comfortable working within radiation environments.
  • Participate in radiological activities that require following extensive safety precautions and use of protective equipment, e.g., respirators and multiple layers.
  • Must be able to lift, push, and/or pull a maximum of 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work sitting and standing for extended periods, grasping/gripping, and fine motor control with hands.
  • Frequent use of computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse, and manual dexterity.
