Project Overview and Description of Duties:

Fellows with Butte Environmental Council will support mitigate the climate crisis through action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from various activities, including planting more than 100 shade, ornamental, and fruit trees, increasing the consumption of locally grown food, offsetting carbon dioxide by growing plants, and diverting food waste from landfills and into community garden composting systems. Butte County and the surrounding region have been heavily impacted by climate disasters, including the Oroville Dam spillway emergency, the 2018 Camp Fire, the 2020 North Complex Fire, and the 2021 Dixie Fire. The project area is centralized in Chico, serves the greater Butte County area, and includes parts of Tehama, Glenn, and Plumas counties. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Support in planting over 100 shade, ornamental, and fruit trees at residences, schools, and parks
  • Coordinate community garden development and grassroots household food composting initiatives and provide outreach to community members to sign up for food waste pickup
  • Recruit volunteers for tree planting and composting initiatives
  • Support outreach efforts to make connections with partner organizations
  • Develop educational materials to present &/or publish through different forms of media
  • Engage with the public through tabling, canvassing, and partnership engagement with other nonprofits, government agencies, and private businesses
  • Support youth education programs that engage students in recycling education, composting education, urban forest, and climate change workshops through BEC's Trees PLEASE (Planting Literacy in Environmental Action and Stewardship Education)
  • Assist in the recruitment and execution of the UC Climate Stewards course
  • Participation in 30-60 hours of training and professional development (not to exceed 20% of total service hours)
  • Fellow duties will not include any prohibited or unallowable activities per 45 CFR §2520.65


Desired qualifications/characteristics:

  • Interest or experience in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service
  • Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change
  • Community outreach and communications experience
  • Volunteer or community service experience
  • Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills
  • Academic experience in environmental issues (math and science coursework)
  • Comprehension of climate change science; California environmental policies; and/or environmental issues focused on urban greening, organic waste, and edible food recovery

Fellows will receive close mentorship from program staff and gain experience in urban greening development, project management, community and youth education, and volunteer coordination. Other benefits include:
