Join the Early Discovery Oncology Bioscience team at AstraZeneca in Gaithersburg, MD as a Scientist-Tumor Targeted Delivery. We're looking for a highly motivated individual with an interest to learn histology and immunohistochemistry. This role offers the opportunity to work independently and in collaboration with others to conduct scientific research as part of a team effort. You'll be responsible for the development of IHC/ISH methods, tissue sectioning, and other histological techniques, as needed.  

Accountabilities: 

In this cross-functional role, you will assist the team in the development of IHC/ISH assays in support of early target discovery and communicate results to team members. You will assess and report data in a clear and concise manner, understanding the implications to the overall context of drug discovery. You will perform microtomy sectioning for the early oncology team and ensure compliance with Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health, and Environment standards. You will also assist in the ordering and organization of necessary reagents and supplies for the histology lab and learn how to independently operate autostainers to help the team generate data. 

Essential Skills/Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, immunology or other relevant biological discipline, with 2-4 years of work experience OR a Master's Degree in biology, immunology or other relevant biological discipline  with at least 1 yr work expereince.
  • Background in laboratory research, especially with some exposure to immunohistochemistry and histology techniques 
  • Strong organizational skills. 
  • Ability to apply immunohistochemistry principles and techniques to help validate new targets. 
  • Ability to prepare precise technical summaries, protocols and all appropriate documentation of experiments in laboratory notebooks. 
  • Responsible for the correct operation and utilization of lab equipment, and overall state of the shared lab space. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to prioritize and work in a fast-paced, matrixed environment. 

Desirable Skills/Experience: 

  • Desire to learn basic human tissue histology and identification of basic elements of tissue under the microscope. 
  • Familiarity with the use and application of Westerns and flow cytometry as they pertain to the validation of commercial antibodies.
