About Our Job

The Denver Sheriff Department is seeking interested applicants for our Crisis Response Team - Doctoral Internship Program.  Successful candidates will have the opportunity to shadow an experienced and dedicated team that goes above and beyond every day to provide a wide range of services to those within the Denver Sheriff’s Department care and custody. Interns will be able to observe and assist the teams daily routines and services provided to those in the care and custody of the Sheriff’s Department; these include but are not limited to providing crisis intervention to individuals with serious mental illness, developing therapeutic rapport with high risk individuals in order to prevent future crises, assisting the deputies in the day-to-day operations of the special management units, assigning appropriate mental health alerts and managing the restrictive housing population.

The Crisis Response Team Doctoral Internship opportunity will allow interested interns the ability gain practical, direct experience working with participants in a variety of activities, working within a multi-disciplinary team as well as individual supervision.  Interns can also anticipate gaining a deeper understanding of trauma informed care and evidence-based practices, as well as gaining exposure to routine and emergent care needs for those that have not been exposed to the unique needs of clients within correctional facilities.

Internship responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the Crisis Response Team clinicians on initial clinical interviews with clients to determine functioning level, how to assign appropriate mental health alerts to clients with mental health needs, and updating mental health alerts when needed

  • Working with the Crisis Response Team clinicians in client evaluations for placement and other services by shadowing clinical assessments and learning recommendation process for other service providers and/or assessments.

  • Conduct assessment and testing services, provide intervention services (both individual and group).

  • Provide one on one services with clients.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of coordinated treatment plans with clients, her/his support system, and other professionals to meet behavioral, medical, and/or psychological needs.

  • Participate in client staffing's to develop treatment recommendations as well as recommendations on reentry and transition planning.

  • Shadowing team members to learn how to present a case/client information to other teammates by utilizing the “systems” model and assessment information.

  • Participating in individual weekly supervision.

About You

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited Doctoral Degree program in the Social Work, Psychology or a closely related field of study.

  • Completion of prerequisite coursework as required by the academic institution.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

  • Interest in a corrections or jail-based facility.

Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:

  • Education requirement: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s or higher degree, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).

  • Experience Requirement: None

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.

  • License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
