Job Description

The purpose of this role is leading and managing the day to day operations of the laboratory ensuring samples are processed accurately, promptly and efficiently for required chemical testing while maintaining high standards of compliance with Health and Safety, Quality System and Customer requirements. 

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the day to day management of the laboratories - Dairy + Food Chemistry Departments, managing a team of qualified scientists, and for implementing company policies and instructions and in particular:

  • Full responsibility for the operation of the laboratory; the quality of the testing provided, the safe maintenance of the equipment and the well-being of the staff.
  • Ensure laboratory is operated in a safe manner in accordance with Eurofins H&S system requirements.
  • Proactively manage operations to meet customer’s requirements by effective planning and day to day management of workflow and testing.
  • Ensure comprehensive procedures are implemented for thorough contract review of all work received and ensure effective and efficient allocation of work on a daily basis to meet business and customer requirements.
  • Implementing quality system requirements in all areas of work including ensuring amendments to the Quality Manual or other QA documentation are promptly initiated, and implemented as instructed.
  • Ensure that quality systems are adhered to and INAB accreditation is maintained and expanded by developing and optimising technical capabilities and new techniques / methods.
  • Increase the capability and range of testing provided by the Laboratory to support profitable growth
  • Provide supervision, training and guidance to staff. Develop and participate in training programmes, undergo further training as required and participate in schemes to ensure on-going competence and development of skills.
  • Ensure that laboratory resources – equipment, materials and staff – are properly managed at all times.
  • Acting as an Authorised Signatory for Test Certificates, report all results in a format required by the customer, providing relevant technical support as appropriate. 
  • Develop, monitor and improve lab KPIs on productivity, efficiency and service delivery to demonstrate effective management of Department.
  • Exercise a sound commercial and financial awareness to help reduce and control costs within the required budget.
  • To uphold and maintain company and customer confidentiality at all times.
  • Possess good working knowledge of relevant documents within the Quality System including Test Methods, SOPs, Quality Manual, methods, EQA & IQC and client specific standards or specifications (where relevant).
  • Ensuring that the reported data is correct, that QC specifications and other requirements of the Quality Manual an of relevant accreditation body have been complied with in respect of the report issued.
  • Undertake ‘root cause’ analysis in the event of any failure
  • Assisting with or perform periodic quality audits, maintenance of quality system, clearance of non-compliances, method development and validation projects, preparations for regulatory and customer audits / visits, as directed.
  • Work as part of the part of the Cork Management team to develop and exceed key performance indicators, deliver budget and growth strategy for the site

Qualifications

  • A Degree Or NCEA diploma in a relevant discipline.
  • Preferably 3-5 years experience in a contract laboratory
  • Good commercial awareness and business acumen
  • Good team player, organised, accurate, have strong documentation skills
  • Passionate about quality and customer service
  • Good communication skill both internally and externally. Ability to understand customers requirements and to be able to devise and articulate the most appropriate solutions.
