Get to Know the Opportunity:
The role is primarily engaged in providing expertise in the processing of our most complex claims or handling project work that supports departmental initiatives. This includes assisting with the distribution and redistribution of work for the claims team. The consultant will be responsible for reviewing complex claims and related situations and making decisions that may sometimes require deviating from normal guidelines. Given the complexity of these claims, it's crucial that the consultant uses discretion in decision-making, which can range from contract interpretation to determining the benefit amounts to be paid. Additionally, the role involves actively suggesting and operationalizing adjustments to standard work processes as needed.
Please Note: Work location for this role is FLEXIBLE! This position allows 100% remote work from home or allows work to be performed in any of our major office locations with a hybrid schedule.
The Contributions You’ll Make:
- Participation in Claims-specific or multi-departmental project work as assigned. May be expected to facilitate or act as project manager on smaller-scale initiatives.
- Review complex claims and/or situations and make informed decisions that may require deviation from normal guidelines and/or judgement in providing direction to other analysts or business units
- Responsible for providing direction, developing, training, and mentoring less experienced claims staff, including completing audits and providing feedback
- May be responsible for managing work queues for assigned team(s), providing direction, prioritization, and reassignment where needed to meet agreements and customer expectations
- Ensures claim controls for monitoring key risk indicators, appeals, and general claim handling agreements are followed.
- Assists or leads team in developing and implementing improvement processes
- Refer cases to legal and compliance and/or may represent company in legal matters surrounding claims decisions
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
Minimum Knowledge & Experience:
- 7 to 10 years Group Life Insurance experience
- 2 to 5 years’ experience claim technical consultant/manager
- Moderate to extensive insurance contract compliance experience
- Knowledge of industry related claim systems and practices
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong ability to influence and motivate others, to include across departments, to solution for shared customers
- Previous experience in process or system improvement projects
- Ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously
- If engaged in production work: capacity to prioritize and help balance large workloads across staff
- High School Diploma or GED
Preferred Knowledge & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
