Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety.  Building on its extensive programming and successful model in the United States, KIND is expanding in the Americas and Europe to bring its experience to bear in working with unaccompanied and separated children. Our work focuses on addressing the legal and mental health needs of this population; building strong partnerships and engaging in training and capacity strengthening with governments, NGOs, and the private sector; and advocating for systemic and pragmatic reforms to advance the rights of unaccompanied and separated children.
Position Summary
KIND seeks a Director, Human Resources Operations to be responsible for the day-to-day management of the functional areas of HRIS; benefits and leave administration; payroll changes; employee relations; policy development and administration; and compensation administration. This position reports to the Senior Director, Human Resources.
This a headquarters position based remotely from any location in the U.S.

Essential Functions

  • Manages the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance management and occupational health and safety.
  • Supports the Senior Director, Human Resources to enhance KIND’s human resources division by creating, implementing, and evaluating human resources policies, programs, and practices.
  • Supports the Senior Director, Human Resources in educating employees on and enforcing organizational policies and procedures.
  • Ensures legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable employment requirements.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Leads employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations. Serves and the lead on employee complaints, manages grievance procedures, and facilitates counseling in conjunction with other stakeholders.
  • Provides oversight of KIND’s benefits and maintains a strong working knowledge of U.S. benefit programs.
  • Works closely with Senior Director, Human Resources and Chief HR Office on developing KIND’s salary structure review.
  • Manages compensation including, job evaluation, benchmarking, and competitive analysis, domestically and internationally.
  • Works closely with Senior Director, Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer on developing and maintaining the Human Resources Operations budget.
  • Supervises Human Resources Operations team of 2-4.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Graduate degree in human resources, organizational psychology, communication strongly preferred. Undergraduate degree required. HR certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of Human Resources management experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Must be fluent in English. Fluency in a second language preferred.
  • Extensive experience developing and implementing Human Resources policies and processes.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations and ability to keep abreast of changes in legislation.
  • Experience working in an international organization preferred.
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills with a high awareness of cultural sensitivities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with staff at all levels.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills and ability to influence; interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated independent judgment and decision-making abilities. Excellent discretion and ability to handle sensitive information with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Strong ability to work within an office environment and with a dispersed workforce.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (such as Teams, Excel, etc.); Strong technological skills, including proficiency in Human Resources information systems, preferably ADP and/or similar systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and multi-task in our KIND environment, managing numerous priorities and emerging opportunities.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment; ability to prioritize tasks and delegate as appropriate.
