Job Duties

Adult Education Teachers are responsible for providing quality instruction that meets the needs of the student in the areas of basic adult education and General Education Development, (GED), standards. Additionally, position is required to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements. Position provides individual and group instruction to adult student inmates. Successful candidate will maintain classroom, equipment, and inventories; ensure compliance with all Department of Corrections, (DOC) regulations; maintain accurate records and submit timely reports; and manage and supervise aides and students in a classroom setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in Adult Education or in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in high school math, science or another relevant subject.

Experience teaching adults and/or youth and knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education is required. Ability to work with adult inmates in a classroom/lab environment.

Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors. The ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects and supervise students and aides in a classroom setting; the ability to maintain accurate records. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs. Demonstrated competency in the relevant field of current licensure.

Licensure: Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education (VADOE) or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies.

Please note you are responsible for any renewal points to maintain a teaching license under the guidelines of Virginia Department of Education to comply with the requirements for your continued employment in this position. If you do not currently hold a teacher's license from the Department of Education (DOE) you must submit all documentation for your provisional teacher's license to the licensure designee for VADOC during the first 90 days of employment. If you are not granted a provisional license within the 1-year probationary period based on your hire date (as mentioned in paragraph #1) your employment will be removed.
