Senior Mental Health Services Clinician Initial Consultation Team Lead

Student Health and Well-Being (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic, organized, and motivated Senior Mental Health Services Clinician Initial Consultation Team Lead to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the well-being of a diverse community of learners. The Senior Mental Health Services Clinician Initial Consultation Team Lead will provide direct clinical services and supervise up to three clinicians conducting triage and referrals through the Initial Consultation process, which serves as the entry point to care at Mental Health Services. Initial consultations are 25-minute appointments, generally conducted via Zoom, that focus on exploring a client’s presenting concerns, performing a brief assessment of key mental and behavioral health indicators, and developing individualized treatment recommendations in collaboration with the client to direct them to the most appropriate service(s) within the MHS portfolio, or to more specialized care in the community.

The Initial Consultation Team Lead will be a warm and welcoming first point of contact for new clients and will possess high-level skills in brief assessment and triage. This position requires a deep understanding of the range of services that MHS provides, as well as a consistent and collaborative approach to treatment recommendations, to support smooth clinical service delivery operations and ensure that clients are referred to the appropriate level of care. This position’s clinical responsibilities will focus on triage and brief assessment and do not involve an ongoing caseload. However, it may engage in single-session therapy modalities (e.g., MHS’ existing Single Session Consultation model) and brief follow-up visits to bridge clients to other care options.

All MHS clinicians work collaboratively with psychiatry, case management, occupational therapy, primary care, and health promotion staff to provide care that emphasizes holistic wellness and mental well-being, leveraging students’ resilience and other key skills.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• The direct clinical service and supervisory responsibilities of this position will primarily be conducted via telehealth and Zoom, with some in-person presence required for key staff meetings and department and division events.
• MHS operates in three licensure jurisdictions, and independent licensure is required in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. MHS reimburses costs associated with maintaining licensure in required jurisdictions.
• Percentages of duties and responsibilities are provided as a general guideline and may vary depending on the time of year, the needs of the clinical service, and program coordination responsibilities.

Initial Consultation Service Oversight (10-20%)

• Manages the Initial Consultation service line, including monitoring utilization and collaborating closely with clinical services leadership to ensure sufficient resource allocation to meet clinical demand.
• Maintains awareness of MHS resourcing on a week-to-week basis to inform clinical dispositions and ensure appropriate recommendations align with available service capacity.
• Leads a weekly consultation group for the initial consultation team and other clinicians who provide brief assessments.
• Closely monitors client satisfaction surveys following initial consultation visits to identify and implement process improvements.
• Provides professional development training and seminars to staff, with a particular focus on brief assessments, diagnostics, and treatment planning.
• Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidence-based intervention strategies, with a particular focus on triage, brief assessments, and single-session therapeutic interventions.

Supervision and Leadership Development (15-20%)

• Supervises 1-3 clinical staff and/or psychology doctoral interns through goal setting, periodic documentation review, performance evaluations, and accountability management.
• Provides clinical supervision to ensure supervisees deliver high-quality mental health services and practice within MHS guidelines; Intern supervision includes reviewing tapes, leading didactic seminars, and participating in training program activities.
• Participates in recruitment, hiring, and training processes for clinical staff and interns.
• Contributes to staff development, engagement, and teambuilding activities and actively participates in MHS-wide events.
