Purpose of Role

As a Paralegal on our Employment Legal Team, you will play a pivotal role in supporting our employment attorneys by managing complex legal matters. You will be at the forefront of ensuring our company complies with employment laws, while providing strategic advice to HR and other departments. This position requires a strong analytical mind, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Your responsibilities will include conducting in-depth legal research and analysis, managing caseloads and maintaining accurate legal documentation, collaborating with the employment attorneys to provide HR with practical legal guidance, staying up to date on employment law trends and regulations, and supporting the legal team in various administrative tasks.

Your Impact

Labor & Employment Compliance:

  • Monitoring federal, state, and local employment law developments and trends that may impact company policy 
  • Conducting legal research on various employment law issues 
  • Developing proposed policies, procedures, and written guidance compliant with related state, federal, local or agency employment practice regulations 
  • Developing and delivering effective skills-based training for human resources clients on various employment law topics 
  • Under the supervision of an attorney, prioritizing and responding to client requests for advice on substantive legal issues, such as compliant hiring practices, wage/hour compliance, federal contractor obligations, and teammate separations
  • Investigating discrimination claims under federal or state statutes
  • Preparing for attorney review draft position statements and responses to administrative claims filed before federal, state, and local agencies
  • Supporting litigation team as needed to investigate and respond to attorney demand letters and administrative requests for information (e.g., federal and state DOL audits)
  • Performing other legal and operational tasks as required to execute business priorities

Administrative Assistance:

  • Opening and maintaining matters in legal billing system; responding to law firm inquiries regarding billing 
  • Drafting various correspondence and legal documents 
  • Supporting the litigation team as necessary in responding to subpoenas and requests for employment and benefits-related records 
  • Maintaining a library of pre-approved form documents, contract clauses, templates, and historical documents, and add or revise material as needed

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree is required; a paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program preferred
  • 7+ years of labor and employment paralegal experience with a minimum of 4 years in-house required; experience in a multi-state retail company is a plus
  • Effectively prioritize, manage, and complete multiple tasks within deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Clearly convey information both verbally and in writing, build strong relationships with colleagues, and work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Apply critical thinking to interpret complex information, identify issues, and develop effective solutions
  • Plan, organize, and manage resources to achieve project objectives successfully
  • Accurately complete tasks while safeguarding sensitive information

Workplace Location

  • Location: This individual must reside within commuting distance from our global headquarters in Baltimore, MD
  • Return to Work Designation: Three (3) days a week, the remainder of work week remote
