Specialist, Technology Engineer - Oracle DBA

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Entry-Level Oracle Database Administrator to join our growing IT team. This role is ideal for developers who wish to continue development activities while learning the concepts to be an effective Oracle DBA. You will work closely with senior DBAs and developers to maintain, monitor, and optimize Oracle databases that support our enterprise applications and the various applications/automations used to provide internal capabilities to the DBA organization and self-service to our customer base.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Oracle database systems (primarily Oracle 19c and above).
Monitor database performance and implement basic tuning strategies.
Support backup and recovery procedures using RMAN and Data Pump.
Help manage user access and security permissions.
Collaborate with developers to optimize SQL queries and understand schema design.
Participate in database upgrade activities.
Document database procedures, configurations, and best practices.
Learn and apply Oracle best practices for high availability, disaster recovery, and data integrity.
Develop and enhance internal/external automation for ease of use/self-service.
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
2–5 years of experience in software development, database support, or IT operations.
Familiarity with SQL.
Basic understanding of relational database concepts.
Eagerness to learn Oracle-specific tools and technologies.
Preferred:
Exposure to Oracle Database through coursework, internships, day-to-day work.
Experience with Linux environments.
Basic understanding of performance tuning and indexing.
Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git).
Postgres experience is a plus
Career Development Plan: Developer to DBA
This role is designed to support a structured transition from software development to database administration. Here’s the planned roadmap:
Phase 1: Foundation (0–3 Months)
Begin contributing to database automation (e.g., using Bash or Python).
Complete internal onboarding and Oracle fundamentals training.
Shadow senior DBAs on routine tasks (backups, monitoring, patching).
Gain hands-on experience with SQL tuning in partnership with our Performance Team.
Phase 2: Skill Building (3–6 Months)
Take ownership of small-scale efforts.
Assist in performance tuning and troubleshooting.
Learn more advanced concepts like RMAN, Data Guard, Real Application Clusters (RAC) and Enterprise Manager.
Continue contributing to database automation scripts (e.g., using Bash or Python).
Phase 3: Specialization & Growth (6–24 Months)
Provide database support as part of the oncall rotation (with backup support).
Explore specialization areas: performance tuning, cloud DBs (AWS), or security.
Mentor new hires or interns transitioning from development.
