The Sheboygan County Medical Examiner's Office is seeking a dedicated and professional Deputy Medical Examiner to help provide critical medico-legal death investigation services for our community.

This unique and highly respected role combines investigative work, public service, forensic science, and compassionate family support. As a Deputy Medical Examiner, you will be entrusted with conducting death investigations, determining cause and manner of death, preserving evidence, supporting public safety efforts, and helping families navigate some of life's most difficult moments.

Examples of duties

As a Deputy Medical Examiner, you will:

  • Conduct comprehensive death investigations throughout Sheboygan County.
  • Respond to death scenes, evaluate circumstances, document findings, and collect evidence.
  • Examine decedents and gather medical, social, and investigative information necessary to determine cause and manner of death.
  • Coordinate investigations with law enforcement agencies, healthcare providers, forensic pathologists, funeral homes, and other partners.
  • Complete detailed reports, documentation, and vital records required by state and federal regulations.
  • Assist with identification of decedents and notification of next of kin.
  • Determine when autopsies or additional testing are necessary and coordinate forensic examinations.
  • Authorize cremation, embalming, and final disposition of remains when investigations are complete.
  • Testify in court proceedings and legal matters when required.
  • Support disaster response planning and emergency management initiatives.
  • Maintain the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality, and investigative integrity.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; education in criminal justice, forensic science, nursing, healthcare, biology, public health, law enforcement, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Valid State of Wisconsin driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background investigations and pre-employment screenings.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any certifications or training required under Wisconsin Statutes and Medical Examiner Office policies.
  • Ability to respond to scenes throughout the county, including after-hours, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments.
