About the role

Description

The Director of Chaplaincy and Community Care is a full-time, exempt position of Denver Rescue Mission (DRM). The Director of Chaplaincy & Community Care reports to the Vice-President of Programs and is responsible for assuring the integrity and efficacy of DRM chaplains. DRM leverages a clinical pastoral education approach to chaplain formation. DRM insists on continuing education for its chaplains. The Director of Chaplaincy & Community Care is responsible for assuring chaplaincy alignment with ongoing changes in DRM programs as it impacts our guests and participants at their spiritual points of need.


RESPONSIBILITIES


General Duties

  • Advance the mission of the Denver Rescue Mission through the delivery of healthy, safe and engaging facility environments within the Denver Metropolitan area. 
  • Foster a culture of grace amongst staff that orients them around the mission of meeting individuals at their physical and spiritual points of need.
  • Create and administer assigned budgets, requisitions, petty cash, and donations.
  • Manage the staff experience: hiring, onboarding, training, managing, performance, conflict, payroll, time-off, etc.
  • Initiate and maintain good relations with all DRM departments, working towards the share goal of Changing Lives in the Name of Christ.

Core Areas of Responsibility

  • Ensure that chaplains embody a non-anxious presence for Christ across DRM’s growing continuum of care.
  • In support of the Homelessness Resolution team, ensure that chaplains are partnering with counselors and case managers to meet guests and participants at their spiritual points of need through a ministry of presence and availability. 
  • In support of the Community Life team, ensure that chaplains are equipped to be responsive to crisis events impacting our guests and participants. 
  • Working with the Community Life team, ensure chaplains are facilitating environments and processes that allow our guests and participants to move forward in their relationship with Christ: chapel services, bible studies, process groups, etc.
  • Working with the Homelessness Resolution team, ensure chaplains are positioned and equipped to support guests and participants in taking their next step on the Christian journey – including connection with the local church.
  • Realizing that DRM chaplains are also positioned to provide spiritual care for DRM staff, particularly in times of crisis, work with the Human Resources team to ensure DRM chaplains make warm handoffs to Employee Assistance Resources and external communities of care for staff members. 
  • Working with the Volunteer Services team, develop and oversee volunteer and internship opportunities that support the goals of the DRM chaplain team.
  • Working with the Vice President of Programs, develop and maintain local church connections with churches eager to welcome our guests, program participants and graduates into their community. 

Other

  • Convene weekly meetings with key staff members that promote collaboration, teamwork, and personal accountability.
  • Represent the Mission at meetings and on committees as directed.
  • Communicate with the public through speaking engagements assignments, community meetings, interviews, etc., as assigned.
  • Perform other tasks, participate in project management teams, and complete additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must possess relevant education, Master of Divinity, Master of Theology, or equivalent education preferred.
  • Abide by the Employee Handbook
  • Affirm the Statement of Faith 
  • Must have completed at least on unit of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) Certification through ACPE or equivalent – or be actively working towards one. 
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a chaplain within a military, institutional or hospital context. 
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience leading and managing a staff team – preferably chaplains.
  • Documented experience with staff development and evaluation
  • Proven ability to maintain composure during stressful situations
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Clear communication skills - both verbal and written
  • Proven ability to manage conflict with and between, subordinates, peers, and superiors expeditiously and respectfully.
  • Track-record of work with low-income, homeless and/or indigent individuals and families
