A Day in the Life

The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer supports and leads the design and development of innovative new products within the Medtronic Diabetes Business Unit. In this role, you will be responsible for product design activities of products such as insulin pumps, glucose sensors, and related accessories. You will work at the intersection of product design and process development, optimizing for customer and business needs. Your new role will have you reporting to the Northridge, CA campus.

The ideal candidate is a skilled mechanical design engineer with experience in product development, design characterization/optimization, and design verification/validation. This individual is experienced in performing design analysis optimization, utilizing finite element analysis paired with simulated design of experiments as well as hands-on prototyping/testing. Experience in plastics and electromechanical assemblies in the medical device or consumer electronics industry a plus.

The person filling this role will become part of a dynamic and fast paced R&D group with a strong history of successful product development. The key to being successful in this job is the ability to think deeply and solve problems creatively, be resourceful, work effectively cross functionally, be self-motivated, work with urgency, and be flexible on project assignments.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional (R&D, marketing, and management) teams to translate project goals into relevant design solutions.  

  • Translate voice of customer (VOC) feedback into engineering design requirements. Develop product concepts to solve user needs.

  • Design components to be manufactured via plastic injection molding, stamping, machining, extrusion, and related processes.  Work with manufacturing to consider high volume assembly processes in design concepts.  

  • Perform tolerance analysis, finite element analysis or other design analysis.  Apply Design for Reliability and Manufacturing (DRM) methodologies.

  • Construct prototype devices for engineering testing and in-vitro/in-vivo studies including animal studies and human feasibility studies.

  • Develop specifications, test methodologies, and test equipment to evaluate design concepts.

  • Perform physical testing on engineering prototypes. Help ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.

  • Prepare documentation to support development activities. Create and release engineering drawings and reports. Process engineering change orders.

  • Work with suppliers to ensure components meet design requirements & diagnose design problems.

  • Present technical findings or project status to cross functional teams and management through design reviews, presentations, meeting minutes, and other means of communication.

  • Production support with respect to testing methods; device specification and yield problems; analysis of customer returns; and supplier related engineering changes.

  • Grow and maintain technical knowledge current with advancing technology related to product development of diabetes devices and accessories.

  • Travel < 25 % of the time

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant science related discipline and 4+ years mechanical design, product development or design verification and validation.

OR

Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant science related discipline and 2+ years mechanical design, product development or design verification and validation.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in SolidWorks or similar CAD software for mechanical design, analysis, and documentation.

  • Experience with physical testing of mechanical systems/components and failure analysis to determine root cause of failures.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and methodologies

  • 2+ years of experience in product design and development in an R&D environment

  • Ability to use structural finite elements software such as Cosmos or Ansys

  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) practices per ASM
