Position Description

Serco is hiring a Senior Marine Welder to be part of a dynamic team supporting our US. Navy Ships with equipment, and C5ISR system installations located in the beautiful surroundings in Chesapeake, Virginia. 

 

Serco supports our US Naval Ships with successful and safe work by providing cabling, equipment, and C5ISR system installations for our Military. You will join an amazing team to fabricate, and assemble various electromechanical and electronic assemblies by applying appropriate safety techniques.

 

You will be part of a team that works closely with the customer and other Serco team members to deliver high technology performed on-board U.S. Naval Ships and military installations.  

 

In this role, you will:

  • Interpret specifications, drawings, blueprints, shop job orders and, process sheets.
  • Use a variety of ARC and gas welding equipment to fabricate or repair products such as foundations, cable collars, cable/pipe/vent hangers, cable tubes penetrations, studs, etc.
  • Perform related task such as thermal cutting (PLASMA or TORCH) and grinding.
  • Have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
  • Assign work to qualified personnel.
  • Train new shop personnel on machinery, tools and test equipment required for quality construction of products.
  • Work onboard U.S. Naval Ships and military installations in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation and the like and with equipment where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, muscle strains, serious injury, or death.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A United States Citizenship. 
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
  • The ability to obtain gain access to shipyards (NAVSTA & DBIDS)
  • The ability to complete successful qualifications in the following Serco Welding Procedures after starting with Serco for continued employment with Serco:
    • Serco-001 (GMAW, Aluminum – 4 position)
    • Serco-002 (SMAW, HY100-4 position)
    • Serco-003 (GMAW, Aluminum – 4 position)
    • Serco-007 (SMAW, C/S to S/S – 4 position)
    • Serco-012 (SMAW, S/S to S/S – 4 position).
  • The ability to Pass steel/stainless SMAW & FCAW
  • The abilty to Pass 5XXX aluminum MIG/aluminum 6G pipe TIG
  • The ability to Pass CuNi 6G pipe test/braze CuNi pipe
  • The ability to obtain a CP certification
  • The ability to obtain a QCR and NDT Level I-II (as required)
  • The ability to successfully complete the 248 Training.
  • A minimum of 8 years of direct welding experience 
  • A minimum of 5 years of Shipyard experience
  • The ability to lead small crews/ tasking. (Up to 10 people)
  • You will have combined experience in the following:
    • Read drawings (Master level)
    • Carbon-arc gouge, ship fit, scribe foundations to suit ship
    • Repair base material
    • Advanced understanding & comprehension of NAVSEA Standard Items
    • Ability to work in efficient tandem with SF/PF/Welder teaming structure
    • Grind/plasma cut/fit/tack weld
  • The ability to conduct safety JHAs & is an advocate for Serco’s “Zero Harm” program.
  • The ability to provide mentorship & oversee OJT of junior welders, pipefitters, or shipfitters.
  • Be familiar with NAVSEA, standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of electrical repair, fabrication, and installation.
  • Get respirator qualified and wear proper PPE throughout their work shift.
  • Have your own tools of the trade and able to pass pre-certification company weld test.
  • Be able to work in high heat spaces, climb shipyard dry dock stairs/ladders, work in kneeling position for layout of cable runs under false decking, lift 50 pounds with 80% of work requiring carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 40 pounds for majority of shift while being in a standing, crouching, or walking position.
  • Have attention to safety (which is critical).
  • Candidate must be willing to travel up to 10% to various work sites.

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • OSHA Certification
