The Senior Database Administrator (Senior DBA) is responsible for the design, performance, integrity and security of production databases in a highly available 24/7 data systems environment. The role will be involved in the planning and development of new databases, as well as troubleshooting any issues on behalf of the users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, configure, monitor, and maintain databases in a large, highly available, distributed, enterprise production database systems.
  • Recommend solutions by defining database physical structure and functional capabilities, database security, data back-up, and recovery specifications.
  • Maintain database performance; implementing new releases; completing maintenance requirements; evaluating computer operating systems and hardware products.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of all aspects of Microsoft SQL Server and MongoDB including administration, replication, backup/restore procedures, and related components such as Reporting Services, Analysis Services, and Integration Services.
  • Work outside of normal business hours as required for completing projects, working on deployments, and resolving system outages.
  • Work with DBAs to determine where the databases will reside in multi-tier distributed/shared applications, comparing hardware/infrastructure alternatives in conjunction with cost, use, growth, supportability.
  • Define database authorization rules, perform security audit, and perform platform assessment regarding proper support for the selected databases. Read and implement entity-relationship diagrams.
  • Develop alerts, reports, and automated processes for failed jobs.
  • Design and develop complex database design from high level business requirements. Must be able to provide database design options, alternatives and recommendations based on experience and best practices for database design.
  • Understand SAN based storage and related technologies, specifically as applicable and useful to MS SQL Server installations.
  • Establish standards for documentation and ensure that all designs are documented.
  • Establish standards for permissions and privileges to databases.
  • Develops, manages, and tests back-up and recovery plans; handles seamless failover and recovery.
  • Work with Systems team on planning server hardware, storage, and OS configuration upgrades.
  • Monitor MS SQL performance through Solarwinds, reporting and remediating any issues within the published SLAs.
  • Perform SQL server migrations - adhering to best practices.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for 24/7 database support.
  • Train, mentor, and guide.
  • Qualifications

    Education & Requirements 

    • Seven (7) years of experience performing database architecture, management, modification and support with five (5) years working with Microsoft SQL Server
    • Experience in supporting large, highly available, distributed, enterprise production database systems
    • Experience and knowledge in the design and implementation of new DBMS systems, programming, analysis and design, systems development or systems administration, MSSQL low-level database, query development and Stored Procedure tuning and optimization, tuning data structures, indexing and queries, managing production databases with replication, hot stand-by, clustering, and table partitioning and working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
