Position Overview
The Novelis Ashville, OH team is seeking a versatile Mechanical Engineer. The individual in this position will use his/ her knowledge of project management to plan and implement key capital projects, drive technology improvements and provide engineering solutions that deliver productivity and improve operations within the business unit.
Responsibilities:
- Perform maintenance on mechanical systems in coating lines, slitters, and associated equipment.
- Support operations through root cause analysis and corrective action for equipment failures.
- Lead or support projects related to equipment upgrades, energy efficiency, and plant expansion.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams for project execution.
- Prepare and maintain equipment documentation, maintenance reports, and project records.
- Implement best processes in reliability, safety, and lean maintenance.
- Contribute to spare parts planning and inventory optimization.
- Responsible for planning, scheduling, and driving area capital projects according to strict deadlines and within budget. This includes accruing resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants to deliver projects according to plan.
- Define project scope, goals and outputs that support Rolled Products outages through direct interaction with planner and team to complete the defined tasks.
- Draft and submit budget proposals and recommend subsequent budget changes when necessary.
- Effectively communicate project expectations to team members, contractors and partners in a timely, clear and concise fashion.
- Work safely, in compliance with all corporate, plant, local, state and federal safety rules and regulations. Keep abreast of current policies and procedures. Ensure outside vendors/ contractors adhere to the same.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in metals (aluminum or steel).
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems in coating lines, slitting machines, and plant utilities.
- Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, rotating equipment, and alignment techniques.
- Hands-on experience with preventive and predictive maintenance tools.
- Project management exposure (planning, execution, and documentation).
- Good communication and team collaboration skills.
- Must possess strong decision making and problem-solving skills including the ability to solve problems while exhibiting practical judgment and realistic understanding of the issues involved.
- Ability to overcome obstacles and find reasonable resolutions to situations on a case-by-case basis as encountered.
- Must have the ability and confidence to make decisions relating to role’s accountabilities.
- Ability to exercise discretion when determining if direction from manager is needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to TPM, Six Sigma, or Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
- Experience with CMMS software
