Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating the Health System's Safety program in order to eliminate unsafe conditions or behaviors and minimize injuries and workers' compensation costs. Conducts daily safety surveillance activity. Investigates and reports on employee injuries. Delivers safety training programs. Works with the Corporate Safety Director to implement programs relating to general safety, fire protection, accident prevention and accident investigation. Conducts and critiques sufficient number of fire drills to involve all employees each calendar quarter. Plans, develops, directs, administers, and coordinates an ongoing, proactive hazardous materials program across the Health System. Performs operational duties related to supporting hazardous waste reduction and in formulating and maintaining hazardous materials and waste procedures and checklists. Maintains compliance with Joint Commission standards relating to safety, hazardous materials and wastes and fire safety. Provides initial and refresher training to staff involved in hazardous materials and waste handling. Develops and maintains plans, policies and procedures relating to handling, storage, use, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials and wastes. Maintains liaison with local, regional and state emergency hazardous materials response agencies.Associate’s degree in occupational safety, fire science, engineering, environmental health, or related field, or Associate’s degree with hazardous materials management experience required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum of 5 years of directly-related work experience may be considered in place of the formal education requirements. Formal training in industrial hygiene and/or safety fire highly desirable. Must possess valid US drivers license and meet requirements to operate Health System vehicle. Must possess or, within first 6 months following hire, be able to complete requirements for OSHA Operations-Level 40-hour HazWOPER certification (40 hours of initial training, 24 hours of annual refresher training). At least four years’ experience in fire prevention, occupational safety and/or hazardous materials management required. Experience with each is highly desired. Knowledge of Joint Commission environment of care standards, US Environmental Protection Agency regulations, NC-DENR and US Department of Transportation hazardous materials shipping standards highly desired. Verbal ability is needed to comprehend and communicate effectively with all levels of hospital staff, physicians, vendors, outside technical representatives and consultants. Good interpersonal skills are required. Strong writing and record keeping skills are required. Analytical and statistical perception required to evaluate response effectiveness, analyze costs, procedures, and techniques and report findings accurately. Must be able to respond expeditiously at any hour when summoned in anticipation of or following emergency situations, or to conduct drills on evening, night and weekend shifts. Computer skills to include, but not limited to, use of Microsoft Office products required. NOTE: Periodic evening, night and weekend work will be required.Walking for long periods of time, standing, and some climbing required when inspecting portable fire extinguishers, conducting drills and providing training. Talking and hearing essential to communicate with others. Manual dexterity for manipulating equipment and handling tools. Visual acuity for inspection and maintenance of equipment. Travel to all Health System facilities is required.
